The largest male specimen of the most venomous spider, named “Hercules,” discovered in Sydney

Wildlife experts in Australia have discovered the world’s largest male specimen of the most venomous spider. The arachnid, named Hercules, measured 7.9 cm (3.11 inches) and is the largest male funnel-web spider given to the Australian Reptile Park, according to officials with the interactive zoo in Somersby on Australia’s Central Coast. Emmi Teni, a park spider keeper, stated in a video posted to the park’s Facebook page that she previously believed the spider was female. “But upon closer inspection, he is a male and has some the biggest fangs I’ve ever seen,” Teni remarked. Males, according to park officials, are often significantly smaller than females.

The deadly Sydney funnel-web spider was discovered on the Central Coast, almost 80 kilometres north of Sydney, and was initially admitted to a local hospital, according to a statement from the Australian Reptile Park. Spider experts quickly recovered it from a nearby park, discovering that it was the largest male specimen ever found in the public in Australia. The spider, which reaches 7.9cm (3.1 inches) from foot to foot, is larger than the largest male funnel-web spider, “Colossus,” which has been in the park since 2018.

Hercules was recently admitted to John Hunter Hospital, which is one of the spider drop-off spots in wildlife reserves

The biggest funnel-web spider donated to the Australian Reptile Park was a female measuring 8cm from foot to foot – comparable to a tarantula. It was founded in 2021 and given the name “Megaspider”. Funnel-web spiders are among the most hazardous arachnids on the planet, according to Dan Rumsey, a former reptile keeper at the Australian Reptile Park, in an interview with USA TODAY. The spider’s venom contains 40 different deadly proteins, and raw venom is the best approach to manufacture life-saving antivenom. If a funnel-web spider bites someone, the park recommends that they keep the afflicted limb immobile, apply a bandage, and seek medical attention right once.

Hercules was recently admitted to John Hunter Hospital, which is one of the spider drop-off spots in wildlife reserves, according to Temi. “Hercules is enormous, as is his venom production. “The person who donated this spider is assisting us in saving lives,” Temi remarked. The spider will be a part of the park’s “funnel-web spider venom programme,” where his venom will be utilized to make antivenom. “We’re used to getting pretty big funnel-web spiders donated to the park, but getting a male funnel-web this big is like winning the lottery,” Emma Teni, a spider keeper at Australian Reptile Park, said on Thursday (Jan 4). “Whilst female funnel-web spiders are venomous, males have proven to be more lethal. With having a male funnel-web this size in our collection, his venom output could be enormous, proving incredibly valuable for the park’s venom programme,” he added.
