Double Masking

Among the long list of precautions that help in reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, wearing a mask takes the presidency. Masking up helps reduce the spread of the disease by up to 95%. Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that double masking can further prevent airflow. Here is everything you need to know about double masking.

What is double masking?

Double masking is wearing two masks instead of one. It provides more security and creates a strong barrier against the virus. According to the US CDC, wearing double masks – cloth and surgical – reduces exposure to the COVID virus by nearly 95 percent. It helps in preventing leakage of air and fits the contour of the face better.

What type of masks to use?

One can use cloth and surgical masks while double masking. This contours your face and prevents the leakage of air.

Knot the ear loops of your mask to tuck in and flatten the sides. It can block 77 percent of the airflow. However, the best way is a combination of surgical and cloth makes. It can restrict the movement of the particles by 85 percent.

How do I know if my mask fits right?

Make sure your mask does not have untucked or open areas. Ensure that double masking does not lock your jaw while talking. You should also be able to breathe freely.

Make sure air does not escape from the top of your mask. Check this by seeing if your masks press in with the airflow when you breathe in. Masks with nose clips provide a better fit.

Rules to follow while double masking

Wear one surgical or disposable mask and a cloth mask. Wash your cloth masks with disinfecting solution or soap. You can add a filter to your cloth mask for added protection.

Remember to dispose of your one-time use mask. However, you must air out your reusable masks for eight days before you use them again.

Things to steer away from

Do not use an N95 or K95 mask with other masks. Do not wear two surgical or disposable masks at the same time. Ensure it is not soiled or damaged. Don’t use chemical disinfectants on your mask.
