T20 World Cup: In a first, ICC to allow COVID-19-positive players to play matches

On Sunday, October 16, the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 began with Namibia pulling off an upset against Asia Cup champion Sri Lanka in the opening match of the competition.

According to reports, for the first time, the ICC will permit players who test positive for COVID-19 to continue competing in T20 World Cup matches. The team doctors will have to decide whether a player should be allowed to play after contracting the virus, according to a report in cricket.com.au.

There won’t be any required testing or isolation times throughout the T20 World Cup

Additionally, according to the ICC, there won’t be any required testing or isolation times throughout the competition. According to the report, teams will be permitted to replace a player who tests positive for COVID-19 by making changes to their roster. Once the infected player has returned a negative report, he can rejoin the team.

It will not be the first instance when a player will be allowed to compete after being infected.

Tahlia McGrath, an all-rounder for the Australia women’s team tested positive before the Australian and India’s Commonwealth Games 2022 final earlier this year, but she was still allowed to play.

She sat aside from teammates when they batted and wore a mask while off the field, although she was part of the celebrations after Australia defeated India.

Australia had put strict rules in place to deal with COVID-19 when the cases were peaking last year.

However, the government has now decided to take a more controlled approach in dealing with the situation this time around.  While the qualifiers kicked off on Sunday, the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 will get underway from October 22.
