US Open: A list of unbreakable records

The much-awaited year’s fourth and final Grand Slam event, US Open 2021 is just less than a week away to get underway. The tournament will begin on August 30th. Many tennis stars in the men’s section have pulled out of the tournament due to injuries. But there are few high-profile players with the likes of World No.1 Novak Djokovic, Olympic gold medallist Alexander Zverev and Roland Garros finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas to make this event more exciting. Among women, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty are the big names that will fight for the championship. So, let us have a look at the unbreakable records of the US Open.

Tracy Austin youngest US Open champion

Tracy Austin became the youngest male or female champion at 16 years, 8 months, and 28 days. She defeated the first-seeded Chris Evert in the final. She is also the youngest inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in history at age 29.

Austin won three Grand Slam titles: the women’s singles titles at the 1979 and 1981 US Opens, and the mixed doubles title at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships. With rules and minimum age requirement participation now changed, this record is likely to stay forever by her name.

Helen Wills – Most successive sets won (54)

Helen Wills did not drop a set at the U.S. National Championships from 1927-33. She won three straight titles from 1927-29, her fourth, fifth, and sixth championships. She won her seventh title in 1931, again without dropping a set. Wills had a 180 match win streak from 1927 until 1933. Overall in her career, she won 31 Grand Slam tournament titles (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles) during her career, including 19 singles titles.

Chris Evert has a career-winning percentage in singles matches of 94.55% on clay court (WTA record)

Chris Evert came closest to Wills’ record four decades later during a five-year spell between 1975-79 when she won 46 consecutive sets. She won four straight titles and also reached the 1980 US Open final. Overall in her career, Evert won 157 singles titles and 32 doubles titles. She also holds the record of most consecutive years (13) of winning at least one Major title. Evert’s career-winning percentage in singles matches of 89.97% (1309–146) is the second-highest in the history of the Open Era, for men or women.

Most Combined US Open titles – Margaret Osborne duPont (25)

Margaret Osborne duPont has clinched the most US Open titles across the competition. She won 25 of her Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Championships, which is an all-time record. No other player in history has won more than 18 combined championship titles. With the competition getting tougher and tougher day by day, this feat is likely to remain intact forever. She was the top-ranked U.S. player from 1948 through 1950.
