Amazon's palm scanner to let US users buy alcohol without ID

To reduce inconvenience and offer a quicker and more comfortable way for users to pay or access a business, Amazon created Amazon One, a palm-based identity service. The Colorado Rockies‘ MLB team’s home stadium, Coors Field, is the first sporting venue to use Amazon One for age verification.

By introducing a new feature called “age verification,” which allows adult customers ages 21 and over to buy alcoholic beverages by merely hovering their palm over an Amazon One device, rather than reaching into their wallets for a physical government-issued ID, the company is addressing that customer pain point and enhancing the guest experience. The Colorado Rockies’ Major League Baseball (MLB) stadium, Coors Field, will be the first place to make age verification available on Amazon One.

Customers who have previously signed up for Amazon One can use the age verification feature by visiting one.amazon.com

Customers who have previously signed up for Amazon One can use the age verification feature by visiting one.amazon.com and uploading a photo of their driver’s license from the front and back as well as a selfie. Government-issued identification cards are checked by an identity verification service that has received ISO 27001 certification; ISO 27001 is a global standard for information security. Customers who have registered for age verification won’t need to show an ID while buying alcoholic beverages at participating establishments. Wherever Amazon One is offered, customers who have not yet pre-enrolled can do so online or at the enrollment kiosks.

Amazon One’s age verification feature addresses these issues and removes the burden—and time—of manual ID verification, which is a known friction point for retailers, bars, and breweries. It results in longer transaction times and strains employee productivity. We are excited to team up with Amazon One to launch their age verification feature at Coors Field,” said Alison Birdwell, president, and CEO of Aramark Sports + Entertainment, a leading provider of food and beverage, retail, and facility service programs in premier sports venues across North America. “Consumer preferences are ever evolving and demand for faster service models continues to grow. Its latest capability directly responds to those demands by delivering a new level of convenience to the age verification process, shortening the time it takes to make an alcohol purchase, and improving the overall guest experience at Coors Field.”

Several third-party locations, including Panera Bread eateries, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, convenience stores, travel retailers like Hudson and CREWS at various U.S. airports, and more offer Amazon One. It is also accessible at more than 100 Whole Foods Market locations. The age verification feature is already functional at Coors Field and will be extended to more businesses in the upcoming months.
