iPhone Duo Screens Are Cracking at the Hinge. What to Do if Yours Does

A handful of iPhone Duo owners say their inner screens cracked along the hinge within hours of launch day. Nobody has shown how common the iPhone Duo hinge crack is. Apple has not commented publicly as of Saturday, October 24.

If you own one, the stakes are mostly about money. Apple’s own price list shows the same broken inner screen can cost you nothing, $99 or $999. What you pay depends on whether Apple sees a defect, whether you have AppleCare+, and how fast you act.

What owners are reporting, and where

MacRumors first reported the problem on Friday, October 23, the Duo’s US launch day. It pointed to photos on Reddit’s r/iPhoneDuo community and the MacRumors forums. Almost all of the faults sit right along the hinge, MacRumors said. Most show up as a line of bright pixels down one side of the screen.

Mashable reported cracks from owners in the US, Australia and China. Digital Trends added Canada and described “a small number of early owners.” No outlet has published a count.

Some of the evidence is thinner than it looks. Several images come from demo units in Chinese stores, where the Duo went on sale hours before the US. The backstory for most photos is unknown, MacRumors noted. Android Authority traced one widely shared set to a Reddit post of four images gathered from Chinese communities.

One owner’s account, and what Apple did

The most detailed case comes from an owner in Australia. He told Reddit he’d had the phone about six hours and opened it fewer than 20 times. He then felt something near the hinge and heard a crack, with no marks on the screen’s surface, MacRumors reported.

His experience getting it fixed is the useful part. Apple’s phone support offered an express replacement, Mashable reported. But he would have had to put down a hold for the phone’s full cost, with no promised delivery date. He went to an Apple Store instead, where staff replaced it on the spot.

That’s one replacement, not an admission of a fault. Apple hasn’t said anything publicly about the reports, and its Newsroom had posted nothing on them as of Saturday morning. MacRumors suggested Apple is likely collecting broken units to study, which would be standard practice.

Why this isn’t proven yet

Every foldable screen bends at the same spot, so the hinge is where first-generation failures tend to show up. Digital Trends pointed to similar early complaints about Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold models. Given how many people bought one on launch day, MacRumors said, some failures should surprise no one.

The stress tests so far point the other way. Joanna Stern ran her review unit through more than 32,000 folds over four nights on a machine she built, MacRumors reported on October 21. The hinge felt “pretty much the same as day one,” and a gauge showed it had grown slightly stiffer. The test had limits, though: the phone was in a case, and the machine didn’t fully close it on every fold.

A photo also can’t rule out user damage. The real signal would be a steady stream of new cases at the same spot, or a statement from Apple.

What a crack costs, and who pays

We checked Apple’s screen repair page on October 24. Without coverage, inner-display damage on a Duo costs $999, and “other damage” costs $1,499. A scratched cover layer on the inner screen is $49. With AppleCare+, the AppleCare price tab lists inner-display damage at $99.

Those are prices for damage. A manufacturing fault is a different matter. Apple’s Limited Warranty covers “manufacturing issues for one year” and excludes accidental damage, the same page says. Consumer law can add to those rights.

So the question at the Genius Bar is whether a technician sees a defect or a drop. That makes the record you keep in the first days more important than usual. It also makes our buyer’s guide math on AppleCare+ look stronger this week.

What to do now if you own an iPhone Duo

If you’re still waiting on a January ship date, none of this changes the order math much. You’ll get a later production unit, and you’ll know far more about the hinge by the time it arrives. Our look at the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro covers the non-folding alternative.

The next test is October 30, when the Duo goes on sale in 28 more countries and regions. If the reports are a real pattern, more cases should appear at the same spot after that wider launch.
