Breezy Explainer: Why Elon Musk is funding a doctor's fight against government-imposed lockdowns

Elon Musk has pledged to assist an Indian-origin doctor in Canada who spoke out against government-imposed lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kulvunder Kaur Gill, an Indian, must pay around CAD 300,000 in legal fees for a case filed against her for tweeting anti-vaccination and anti-lockdown tweets.

During her legal battle, the Indian-origin doctor launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds and donations to cover her legal bills. Elon Musk saw this on social media platform X and reached out to her, offering to help pay the legal expenses.

“X is proud to help defend Dr. Kulvinder Kaur Gill against the government-supported efforts to cancel her speech….Because she spoke out publicly on Twitter (now X) in opposition to the Canadian and Ontario governments’ COVID lockdown efforts and vaccination mandates, she was harassed by the legacy media, censored by prior Twitter management, and subjected to investigations and disciplinary proceedings by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario that resulted in “cautions” being placed on her permanent public record,” stated the official account for X News.

Elon Musk reposted the news, expressing his support for Dr. Gill and her “right to speak”

Dr. Gill was particularly vocal during the COVID-19 pandemic on X, formerly Twitter, where she made several anti-vaccination and anti-lockdown statements. According to sources, Gill has been vocal about how the COVID-19 vaccine is “unnecessary.”.

Her posts were heavily attacked by the medical community, which continued to dispel several fallacies about the COVID-19 immunization. In retribution, Dr. Gill sued around 23 doctors, journalists, and news outlets for slander.

The judge dismissed the action, citing anti-SLAPP law (Strategic Action Against Public Participation) and claiming that Dr. Gill attempted to silence her opponents on a public forum. She was subsequently compelled to pay the defendants’ legal fees.
