The tensions between the United States and China over the South China Sea and Taiwan are at an all-time high. These mock drills show China’s ambition of building up its anti-carrier capacity, especially against the US Navy. The use of a US aircraft shows that they’re preparing for ways to fight the US Navy if the need arises. According to Maxar, the mock-up battles were in Ruoquiang. Ruoquiang is a Taklamakan Desert country in the northwestern province of Xinjiang.

Additionally, according to the official website of the Independent US Naval Institute, the mock US ship was a part of a new target range by the People’s Liberation Army. However, USNI stated that it fund characteristics such as funnels and weapons systems on the destroyer. Unfortunately, more details on the specificity of the targets are unclear from the images.
