Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Laureate, and activist tied the knot with Asser Malik. On Tuesday, the 24-year-old also shared photos from her nikah ceremony on her Twitter account. The event likewise took place in the city of Birmingham, in the United Kingdom.
“Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,” Yousafzai said in her tweet.
Malala ties the knot
Apart from his first name, Yousafzai provided no further details about her marriage. Social media users identify Asser Malik as a general manager of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s high-performance facility, from Lahore.
For her courage and eloquence in pushing for the rights of girls and women, the campaigner for girls’ education garnered international notice. She then stood up to the Taliban, who were against girls going to school.
She was advocating against the Taliban’s attempts to deny women access to education. It was at this time a Taliban gunman shot her in the head in 2012.
At the age of 17, she also became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate ever in 2014. In 2018, she created Assembly, a digital publication for girls and young women available on Apple News. She earned a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University in June of last year.
