New Dress Code Policy at Charles Middle School
Charles Middle School in El Paso, Texas, has introduced a new dress code policy prohibiting students from wearing all-black outfits, citing concerns over mental health. Principal Nick DeSantis informed parents that this new rule aims to address an emerging trend among students.

In a letter to parents, DeSantis explained that the “look” of students wearing black tops and bottoms has become associated with depression, mental health issues, and even criminality. He emphasized that the school wants to promote a positive and healthy learning environment.
Exceptions to the rule
Despite the new dress code, the policy does allow for some flexibility. Students can wear black clothing on specific free dress days. Norma De La Rosa, president of the El Paso Teachers Association, noted that teachers have observed changes in students’ dress when they are stressed or depressed.
“The dress code changes were a response to concerns and recommendations brought forward by the stakeholders of Charles Middle School,” the school said in a statement to local media. The decision was based on feedback from various community members.

A concerned commenter stated, “Ah yes, ’cause it’s the clothes and not what they’re facing inside that’s the problem. Give them counseling instead of banning them from wearing what makes them comfortable.”
