A California woman who spent years fighting stage 4 breast cancer and inspiring loved ones with her resilience was found dead inside a suitcase in her Berkeley apartment, according to authorities. Her boyfriend has since been arrested and charged with her murder.
The victim, Vanessa Sanchez, 37, was discovered deceased on May 30 after family members and friends reported her missing when she suddenly stopped responding to calls and messages.
Investigators allege that Sanchez was killed inside her apartment and that her body was concealed in a suitcase for several days before it was discovered.
What Happened to Vanessa Sanchez?
According to court documents cited by local media reports, surveillance footage captured Sanchez entering her apartment building on California Street in Berkeley with her boyfriend, 28-year-old Damarcus David Jones, on May 24.
Authorities say that was the last time Sanchez was seen alive.
Investigators later reviewed additional surveillance footage that allegedly showed Jones returning to the building two days later carrying a large rolling suitcase. Cellphone records reportedly placed him at the apartment in the days following Sanchez’s disappearance.
As concern grew among Sanchez’s relatives and friends, they reported her missing.
The search ended tragically when a property manager entered the apartment and discovered her body.
According to investigators, Sanchez’s remains were found inside a trash bag concealed within a suitcase.
What Have Authorities Alleged?
Court records indicate that Sanchez suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including injuries to her head and neck.
Jones was arrested in Solano County on June 2 and has been charged with murder.
According to reports, investigators claim Jones admitted to killing Sanchez. Authorities further allege that he attempted to conceal the odor from the apartment by opening windows and operating an air purifier after her death.
Law enforcement officials also said Jones was on probation stemming from a felony assault conviction last year.
The criminal case remains ongoing, and prosecutors will ultimately be required to prove the allegations in court.
A Life Marked by Courage
The circumstances surrounding Sanchez’s death have drawn particular attention because of the challenges she had already overcome in recent years.
In 2023, Sanchez was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Family members say she approached the diagnosis with determination and continued to embrace life despite the physical and emotional difficulties associated with the disease.
What began as a fundraising campaign to help cover medical expenses during her cancer battle has now reportedly been transformed into a memorial page honoring her life.
Friends and relatives have remembered Sanchez as a compassionate person who deeply valued her relationships and made those around her feel supported and appreciated.
Family Pays Tribute
In an obituary shared by her family, Sanchez was described as someone who loved wholeheartedly and had a unique ability to make others feel seen and cared for.
Her loved ones said her loss has left an immeasurable void.
“The world lost a bright, bright light,” her family wrote. “Words cannot express the magnitude of this loss.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sanchez’s death.
Jones remains charged with murder, and the case is expected to move through the California court system in the coming months.
As the legal process unfolds, Sanchez’s family and friends are mourning the loss of a woman they say demonstrated extraordinary strength throughout her life, only to have that journey end in a tragedy that has shocked the Bay Area community.
