An American citizen, Dena Karari, who had been detained in Iran since late 2024, has been released and is on her way back to the United States, according to her attorney, marking a rare humanitarian development amid strained relations between Washington and Tehran.
President Donald Trump announced the release on Wednesday, describing the move as a “gesture of goodwill” by Iran.
Trump Announces Dena Karari’s Release
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had allowed an American citizen who had been “wrongfully detained” to leave the country.
“She is now safely outside of Iran and in good condition,” Trump wrote. “The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!”
While Trump did not initially identify the individual, her attorney, Jared Genser, later confirmed that the released American was Dena Karari, a US citizen who had been held in Iran since December 2024.
Attorney Confirms She Is Safe
Genser said Karari had successfully left Iran and was travelling back to the United States.
Although details surrounding her detention and release have not yet been made public, her attorney confirmed that she is safe and in good condition.
Officials have also not disclosed whether her release resulted from direct diplomatic negotiations, third-party mediation, or another arrangement.
A Rare Development in US-Iran Relations
Karari’s release comes against the backdrop of long-running tensions between the United States and Iran. The two countries have repeatedly clashed over issues including Iran’s nuclear program, regional security, sanctions, and the detention of foreign nationals.
Prisoner releases between the two countries have occasionally occurred through negotiated exchanges or humanitarian agreements, often facilitated by intermediary governments.
Trump characterized the move as a positive gesture from Tehran, though neither the Iranian government nor its diplomatic representatives immediately provided additional details about the circumstances of Karari’s release.
Questions Remain
Several key questions remain unanswered, including:
- Why was Dena Karari detained in Iran?
- What led to her release after several months in custody?
- Were any concessions or diplomatic understandings involved?
- Will her release lead to broader engagement between Washington and Tehran?
For now, officials have confirmed only that Karari is no longer in Iranian custody and is returning home to the United States.
Further details are expected as US officials and Karari’s legal team provide additional information.
