What are the smuggling allegations against Jair Bolsonaro?

Jair Bolsonaro, the former President of Brazil left the nation and went to the US days before the announcement of the Presidential elections last year. He is most likely to delay his return following allegations of illegal movement of jewelry worth $3 million. On March 6, Justice Minister Flavio Dino ordered a criminal probe into Bolsonaro’s alleged hand in illegally bringing jewelry worth $3.2 million to Brazil. It mentions gifts received by the former president from the Saudi government in 2021. It was seized by customs at São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport in October 2021.

As per media reports, a government staff tried bringing the jewelry in their backpack. It contained a ring, a diamond necklace, earrings, and a watch designed by Chopard, a Swiss luxury designer. Brazillians are allowed to bring goods or gifts worth $1000 without taxes. However, for anything above that, they must pay heavy taxes. A source revealed to Reuters that “a series of letters from officials in Bolsonaro’s government” asks for the items to be released. The former president stated he was “crucified”, claiming he never received the gifts.

How does this affect the former Prez’s return to Brazil?

Jair Bolsonaro entered US soil with the help of a visa reserved for government officials and heads of state. He is currently living in Florida and also extended his stay through a six-month tourist visa. In addition to this, there are several other concerns regarding his return to Brazil. For example, his supporters stormed the Supreme court and clashed with police while raising slogans in January. “He spurred attacks on the three powers whenever he could. This is also his responsibility,” stated President Lula. Referring to the incident in the capital, she stated Bolsonaro “triggered” the violence. As per a Bloomberg report, the leader was supposed to return in March and lead the opposition. However, the party suspended the plan after the scandal came to light.
