Breezy Explainer: What's air defence system and how India thwarting Pakistan's drone and Fatah missile attacks
India’s advanced systems successfully intercept Pakistani aerial strikes

The Ministry of Defence confirmed in its May 9 evening press briefing that Pakistan launched aerial strikes on military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur on the night of May 8. However, these attacks were successfully intercepted and neutralized by India’s sophisticated air defense systems, preventing any significant damage to military installations.

As tensions continue to escalate between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, understanding India’s air defence capabilities provides crucial context to the ongoing conflict.

What is an air defense system, and how does it work?

An air defense system is a comprehensive military mechanism designed to protect a country’s airspace from enemy aircraft, missiles, drones, and other airborne threats. These systems utilize a sophisticated combination of radar, sensors, missiles, and gun systems to detect, track, and respond to aerial threats by neutralizing them before they can reach their intended targets.

The system functions through four main operational stages:

  1. Radar and sensors detect incoming threats
  2. Command-and-control centers process this data and prioritize responses
  3. Weapon systems are deployed to intercept identified threats
  4. Neutralization occurs before the threats can inflict damage

These defensive installations are typically mobile units capable of rapid deployment, making them particularly effective in dynamic battlefield situations. The air defense process unfolds in sequential stages: Initially, radar and sensors detect airborne dangers; then, the tracking phase begins, where the movement, speed, and trajectory of enemy aircraft or missiles are continuously monitored; finally, once a threat is accurately tracked, it is eliminated before causing harm.

This defensive framework relies heavily on advanced technology to ensure quick and precise detection and neutralization of incoming threats.

How India is thwarting Pakistan’s attacks

India is currently utilizing three primary air defence systems to neutralize Pakistan’s aerial threats:

S-400 ‘Sudarshan’ System

India purchased the S-400 missile system from Russia in 2018-19, which is specifically deployed around the Jammu region. This advanced system is designed to neutralize fighter jets, helicopters and drone attacks. India has renamed this system as ‘Sudarshan’ for operational purposes.

The Russian-made system is exceptionally powerful, featuring a detection range of up to 600 kilometers and an engagement range extending to 400 kilometers. Reports indicate that India successfully neutralized Pakistan’s attacks on Jammu, Pathankot and Udhampur using the S-400 system.

Indigenous ‘Akash’ System

India has also effectively employed its indigenous Akash air defence system, which has proven successful in preventing these attacks. The domestically developed system represents India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology.

Israeli ‘Spider’ System

India has acquired the ‘Spider’ air defence system from Israel, which has further enhanced the country’s capability to counter aerial threats, providing an additional layer of protection against incoming missiles and drones.

Multi-layered defence strategy

Defence experts interviewed by zeenews.com explained the technical challenges involved: “Each radar has its own capability. Some radars take up to 65 seconds to detect a threat, so it is crucial to pick up fast-moving missiles quickly, even before they cross the border.”

They emphasized that the speed of incoming missiles, traveling at 15,000 to 17,000 kilometers per hour, requires an instant response to neutralize the threats effectively. India’s air defence architecture features multiple protective layers. While the first layer engages threats at long range, the second and third layers operate at medium and short ranges, respectively.

“We have our radars ready. The drones and missiles from Pakistan are detected even before they reach close. They are neutralized before causing any damage,” the analysts explained.

Escalating tensions following Operation Sindoor

India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 7 as a direct response to the April 22 Pakistan-backed terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The operation targeted several terror launchpads at nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in precision strikes. Pakistan acknowledged significant losses resulting from the operation and confirmed at least 33 deaths, though it attributed the damage to its own failed air defense systems.

In response to the strikes, Pakistan launched a series of attacks targeting India’s border states, significantly escalating tensions. On the evening of May 8, both nations exchanged offensive operations from their respective territories using drones, missiles, artillery shelling and small arms fire.

The Ministry of Defence reported that Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks on military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur, which were successfully intercepted. “There were no casualties. India remains committed to defending its sovereignty and protecting its citizens,” the ministry emphasized. On Saturday, Pakistan even launched its long-range Fatah missile, which was intercepted over Sirsa in Haryana.

However, Pakistan has rejected India’s claims, denying involvement in any attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. “We have not done anything so far. When Pakistan attacks, everyone will know,” said Defense Minister Khwaja Asif.

As tensions between the two countries continue to escalate, the effectiveness of India’s air defence systems in blocking aerial strikes remains a crucial factor in maintaining national security and preventing further escalation of the conflict.

This is a developing situation. More details will be reported as they become available.
