Who is Kim Ju Ae? Kim Jong Un Brings Daughter to Beijing, Fueling Succession Speculation

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a rare overseas trip this week, and he didn’t come alone. His teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, joined him on a state visit to Beijing, marking what appears to be her first international appearance.

The visit, timed with China’s military parade commemorating Japan’s surrender in World War II, has intensified speculation that Kim is preparing Ju Ae as his eventual successor.

Why Kim Ju Ae’s trip matters

A first for the Kim dynasty

Official photos released by North Korea’s KCNA and carried by AFP showed Ju Ae stepping off her father’s armored train at Beijing Railway Station on September 2. Wearing a navy-blue suit, she walked alongside Kim as they were greeted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

This level of public visibility is unprecedented. Neither Kim Jong Un nor his father Kim Jong Il ever brought their children on official foreign trips. The move suggests Ju Ae is being intentionally introduced to the diplomatic stage.

A slow but deliberate unveiling

Ju Ae first surfaced in global headlines back in 2013, when former NBA star Dennis Rodman claimed he had held Kim’s baby daughter during a trip to Pyongyang. Almost a decade passed before her official debut: state media introduced her in November 2022 at the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Since then, Ju Ae has been a fixture at high-profile North Korean events—from military parades to missile tests—where state media has taken to calling her Kim’s “respected” daughter.

Analysts: “She’s the frontrunner”

Kim’s decision to spotlight his daughter has convinced many observers that she is being positioned to inherit power.

“Right now, Ju Ae is the frontrunner as the next supreme leader of North Korea,” Michael Madden, a North Korea leadership specialist at the Stimson Centre, told Reuters. “She is getting practical protocol experience, which should serve her well as North Korea’s next leader or a core elite.”

South Korea’s intelligence service has made similar assessments, saying Ju Ae’s prominence points to a grooming process. But whether North Korea’s male-dominated military and party elite would accept a female leader remains an open question.

The risks and the precedent

If Ju Ae does succeed her father, she would become the fourth member of the Kim dynasty to lead North Korea, after her great-grandfather Kim Il Sung, grandfather Kim Jong Il, and father Kim Jong Un.

But the grooming process is highly unusual. Kim Jong Un himself was only revealed as heir late in his father’s rule, and he never traveled abroad as a child or young adult. By contrast, Ju Ae is being placed in the spotlight at an early age, suggesting the regime is testing how both domestic elites and the international community react to her presence.

Kim Jong Un’s health keeps the question alive

The speculation is further fueled by recurring questions about Kim Jong Un’s health. Now in his early 40s, he has been reported to suffer from gout and weight-related issues. While he has maintained tight control of North Korea through the pandemic and ongoing tensions with the U.S. and South Korea, uncertainty about his long-term stability makes succession planning critical.

For Beijing, the symbolism of this visit is twofold: showcasing unity with Pyongyang while also tacitly signaling continuity in North Korea’s leadership.

What comes next?

The next major clue may come from how frequently Ju Ae appears in state media and whether she is given formal titles within the ruling Workers’ Party. For now, her Beijing debut signals that North Korea is serious about shaping her international profile early.

If she is indeed Kim’s chosen successor, the world is watching the next chapter of the Kim dynasty unfold in real time.

TL;DR

Kim Jong Un brought his teenage daughter Kim Ju Ae to Beijing for her first known overseas appearance, sparking fresh speculation she’s being groomed as North Korea’s future leader. Analysts call her the “frontrunner,” though questions remain about whether a woman could secure power in the patriarchal regime.
