Who was Hersh Goldberg-Polin, US citizen killed by Hamas in Gaza?

A Tragic End to a Young Life Filled with Dreams

Tel Aviv, Israel — The Israeli authorities have confirmed the death of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American hostage who was abducted by Hamas militants during the October 7 attack on southern Israel.

The 23-year-old’s body was discovered early Sunday morning in the Hamas-run tunnels under Rafah, along with five other hostages, dashing hopes for his safe return.

A life cut short

Hersh Goldberg-Polin was born in Oakland, California, and moved to Israel with his family in 2008, when he was just seven years old. Holding dual citizenship, he was known for his “happy-go-lucky” demeanor and a profound love for geography and travel. His room, filled with atlases, globes, and National Geographic magazines, bore testament to his passions. He had planned an around-the-world trip set to begin in December 2023, a dream that was tragically interrupted by the events at the Nova music festival.

The Nova Music Festival attack

On October 7, 2023, Hersh Goldberg-Polin attended the Nova Music Festival in southern Israel, where he was one of the hundreds of young attendees taken hostage during a surprise Hamas attack that resulted in over 1,200 deaths. In a desperate bid for safety, Goldberg-Polin and his friends sought refuge in a bomb shelter. Demonstrating remarkable bravery, he attempted to throw back grenades lobbed by Hamas militants, losing his left arm from the elbow down in the process.

Throughout his captivity, Goldberg-Polin’s parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, were tireless advocates for the release of hostages, including their son. They frequently met with top US officials and publicly urged the Israeli government to negotiate a deal for the hostages’ release.

A somber announcement

Hersh Goldberg-Polin was pronounced dead on September 1, nearly a year after his abduction. His body was found in the tunnels under Rafah, where he and the other hostages were reportedly killed shortly before Israeli troops arrived.

The death of Hersh Goldberg-Polin is a poignant reminder of the tragic human cost of conflict. As Israel and the international community mourn his loss, his story stands as a testament to the resilience and bravery of a young man whose dreams and life were abruptly cut short.
