Employee dismissed after protesting Microsoft’s military ties
Microsoft has terminated software engineer Joe Lopez following his vocal protest during CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote address. Lopez interrupted the speech to condemn Microsoft’s provision of AI and cloud technology to the Israeli military, specifically referencing its potential use in Gaza.
The incident occurred minutes into Satya Nadella’s presentation at a Seattle conference center, where Lopez shouted, “Free Palestine!” before making direct accusations about Microsoft’s Azure platform.
“Satya, how about you show how Microsoft is killing Palestinians? How about you show how Israeli war crimes are powered by Azure?” Lopez declared before security escorted him out.
Mass email reveals deeper employee discontent
Following his removal, Lopez sent a company-wide email to thousands of Microsoft employees expressing his dismay.
“Leadership rejects our claims that Azure technology is being used to target or harm civilians in Gaza,” Lopez wrote. “I’m shocked by the silence from our executives on this critical issue.”
This protest follows similar actions by former Microsoft engineers Vaniya Agrawal and Hossam Nasr, who disrupted the Build 2025 conference’s AI security session. Agrawal, fired after her April protest, has become an outspoken critic on social media.
Mass email reveals deeper employee discontent
In an official blog post, Microsoft acknowledged providing:
- Azure cloud services
- AI tools, including language translation
- Professional software solutions
to the Israeli military, while emphasizing these were used exclusively for hostage recovery operations. The company stated it maintains rigorous oversight of such contracts, approving some requests while denying others, and found no evidence of its technologies being used against Gaza civilians.
Human rights organizations continue to express concerns about potential misuse of AI in military applications, particularly regarding error rates that could endanger civilian lives.
