Twitter stopped its recent $8 verification or blue tick membership program as the number of bogus and fraudulent accounts rose.

Prior to this, the desired blue tick mark was only present on verified accounts of public personalities, such as politicians, actresses, and renowned journalists. According to a source who spoke to Reuters, the blue tick verification service has been discontinued.
This week, Twitter unveiled a membership option that is open to anyone willing to pay it in an effort to boost revenue as the site’s new owner, Elon Musk, fights to keep out advertising.
On the platform, worries about hate and fake news have been rising. Recently, a false Twitter account claimed that insulin would be free. In response to the outcry from the public and questions about the drug’s exorbitant price, Eli Lilly & Co. issued an apology. Another such instance was the dissemination of numerous bogus tweets about Tesla by a verified user who used the same profile picture as the company’s official account.

Musk responded by saying that accounts that use impersonation on Twitter without specifically labeling it as “parody” accounts will be deleted right away and forever. Several accounts, including those of BP and Nintendo, have been suspended.
According to sources cited by Reuters, the new owner warned the staff on Thursday that the company wouldn’t be able to survive the upcoming fiscal year if subscription revenue wasn’t increased to offset the declining advertising revenues.
Many companies, including General Motors and United Airlines, have stopped their advertising on Twitter ever since the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, took control of the platform.
