13 omicron cases in Portuguese soccer team

Portuguese health officials identify 13 omicron cases. A new coronavirus variant thought to be more contagious has been found. Among team members of a professional soccer club. As per Ricardo Jorge National Health Institute, one of those who tested positive at the Belenenses soccer club in Lisbon. He had recently traveled to South Africa, where the omicron variant was first identified.

The others, on the other hand, had not traveled to South Africa. Implying that this could be one of the first cases of local transmission of the virus outside of southern Africa. Those who have had contact with the positive cases have been ordered to isolate. Regardless of vaccination status or exposure to possible contagion, and will be tested for COVID-19 regularly, according to the institute.

As new coronavirus cases are rising around the world. Japan announced Monday that it will suspend all foreign visitor entry. Joining an increasing number of countries that are tightening their borders as fear spreads of yet another extension of pandemic suffering. Japan, which has yet to detect any cases of the recently discovered omicron variant, has reimposed border controls. Restrictions were eased down earlier this month for short-term business visitors, foreign students, and workers.

We are taking the step as an emergency precaution to prevent a worst-case scenario in Japan

Despite widespread concern, scientists cautioned that it is unclear. Whether omicron is more dangerous than other strains of a virus that has killed over 5 million people. Some countries are sticking to previous plans to relax restrictions, with Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand showing signs of reopening. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says, “We are taking the step as an emergency precaution to prevent a worst-case scenario in Japan.” As of now, Japan closes its borders to foreign tourists.

Kishida urged people to continue wearing masks and taking other basic anti-virus precautions. Until more information about the new omicron variant became available. Israel has decided to bar foreigners from entering the country. And Morocco has announced a two-week suspension of all incoming flights beginning Monday. On Monday, the Scottish government made an announcement regarding the discovery of six new cases of the omicron variant of coronavirus. Bringing the total number of cases in the United Kingdom to nine.

Other countries that reported new cases over the weekend included the Netherlands. Out of which 13 confirmed cases, and Canada, which has two. Officials in Malaysia, on the other hand, proceeded with the partial reopening of a bridge connecting the country to the island city-state of Singapore. In addition, New Zealand announced that it will continue with plans to reopen its internal borders after months of closure, while also restricting travel from African countries. The World Health Organization calls for borders to remain open. Citing the fact that the variant has already been detected in many countries. While losing borders often has a limited effect.
