Met Gala 2023: Best and worst dressed celebrities of the night

The much-anticipated Met Gala 2023 was held on May 1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and it was a star-studded affair with the top stars in their respective fields of endeavour on the red carpet in chic attire. The yearly gala’s subject this year was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” honouring the illustrious fashion designer. The Met Gala is not only the biggest evening in American fashion, but it is also the red-carpet event that fans of celebrities look forward to the most. The wide-ranging impact Lagerfeld has had on the fashion business over the past 50 years was evident in the attendees’ creative efforts, which varied from conventional attire to absurd costumes. Let’s look at some of the notable outfits from the 2023 Met Gala that either impressed or disappointed the audience and viewers.

Here are some of the best and worst looks of Met Gala 2023

Karl Lagerfeld’s affinity for cats was acknowledged in Doja Cat‘s Met Gala 2023 ensemble. She wore a silver Oscar De La Renta garment that was bejewelled and embellished, as well as fake cat ears and a human face. The ensemble paid humorous and original homage to Lagerfeld’s love of cats. It’s safe to assume that Doja Cat’s appearance would make the 2019 Cats movie jealous. Her distinctive and striking outfit was a big hit during the event overall.

Billie Eilish was a star at the Met Gala the year before, so it was upsetting to see her wear a garment that was practically identical. Although the dress has a fitted bodice and sheer sleeves, it feels more like a step backwards in fashion than a forward one because it is essentially the same design in a different colour. The inventive and progressive nature of Lagerfeld’s designs makes this type of outfit repetition all the more deserving of criticism. Billie Eilish is well renowned for her distinctive fashion sense, therefore it’s disappointing that she chose such a boring look for the 2023 Met Gala.

Kim Kardashian is well-known for her contentious Met Gala attire, including her “wet dress” in 2019 and her Marilyn Monroe-inspired ensemble from the previous year. But we were disappointed and underwhelmed by this year’s attire. It seemed to represent the decline of her dominion because it lacked imagination and originality. She donned a clunky nude panelled waist trainer rather than giving a risque and seductive homage to her 2007 Playboy image with just a few pearls and tonnes of skin. Overall, Kardashian’s gown was drab and fell short of her Met Gala appearances in the past.

At the 2023 Met Gala, Dua Lipa dazzled in a vintage Chanel gown that radiated opulence. The white dress had a long skirt with pockets, a corset-style bodice with a low neckline, and tassels at the hem. She dressed in black with her hair down and wore a long silver necklace as jewellery. The late Karl Lagerfeld initially created the outfit for Chanel’s 1992 fall/winter collection. Lipa’s attire honoured the illustrious fashion designer while also exhibiting her own distinctive flair and grace. The “Levitating” singer ensured she was the centre of attention as she walked the Met Gala red carpet in her gorgeous gown.

For such a significant fashion occasion, Kendall Jenner’s attire for the Met Gala might have fallen short. The rest of her outfit was lacking compared to her gorgeous hair and jewels. The cheeky design appeared to be modelled after gymnastics leotards, but the jumble of allusions gave it the appearance of a costume rather than an actual clothing item. In spite of this, the outfit is undeniably attractive and flattering to Jenner. Although the thigh-high boots are an eye-catching element, wearing them with a black sheer hose might have been preferable. Overall, it’s a risky appearance that falls short of the mark but still makes a statement.
