Highlights of the new IPCC report
The sixth edition Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released on Monday reveals the need for “urgent” actions for countering human-caused climate change. IPCC reports are considered the most authoritative assessment of the state of climate change, and global warming. Additionally, since its establishment in 1988 is the rulebook for its consequences and measures being used for battling it.
“Without urgent, effective, and equitable mitigation and adaptation actions, climate change increasingly threatens ecosystems, biodiversity, and the livelihoods, health, and wellbeing of current and future generations,” stressed the report. However, the report is not completely gloomy. It also highlights the various effective and feasible methods for reducing emissions and adapting to the issue.
UN Report: Humanity stands on thin and fast-melting ice
Christopher Trisos, a co-author of the IPCC report “underlines how important it is to not only accelerate climate action but to do it in a way that helps everyone in the world, not just those in the wealthiest countries and regions”. Additionally, Trisos is the director of the Climate Risk Lab at the African Climate and Development Initiative. “Humanity is on thin ice — and that ice is melting fast. Our world needs climate action on all fronts — everything, everywhere, all at once,” stated Antonio Guterres. Guterres is the United Nations Secretary-General.
Moreover, several environmental groups praised the findings. “This is the stone-cold truth laid out in unassailable science by the world’s top climate experts. We’re hurtling down the road to ruin and running out of time to change course,” stated Manish Bapna. Bapnais the president and CEO of the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We’re also leaving the most vulnerable among us to pay a price they can’t afford for a crisis they didn’t cause. We’re condemning our children to a world of cascading disasters,” he added.
