Twitter bans ads that contradict science on climate change

Twitter has announced that it will not permit advertisers which deny the scientific consensus on climate change to advertise on its platform, mirroring a Google policy. There was no evidence that the move would have an impact on what users post on social networking sites. However, Twitter-like Facebook has been targeted for promoting false climate change claims.

“Ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” the company said. Twitter said it would share additional details in the coming months. The details will focus on how it plans to provide “reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations” its users are having. These include conversations from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The statement coincidentally came out on the occasion of Earth Day. However, the major reason behind the statement was the issue of rising temperatures around the globe. Twitter’s new policy was unveiled just hours before the EU‘s orders. It ordered digital firms to be more attentive to hate speech and other harmful content on their platforms. (Xanax)

The studies of a United Nations-backed science group on the causes and impacts of climate change serve as the foundation for international climate change negotiations. The corporation already has a dedicated climate issue on its website. They’ve provided “pre-bunks” to combat climate change disinformation at last year’s United Nations climate summit.

Google had created an interactive doodle for Earth Day. The aim was, however, to raise awareness about the world and the effects of climate change. To demonstrate the impact of climate change on the earth; real time-lapse imagery from Google Earth and other sources were in use. The company said, “Acting now and together to live more sustainably is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change.”
