The latest survey on deteriorating mental health in LGBTQ+ youth reveals over 50 percent of non-binary and trans individuals in the US have considered suicide in the past year.
New survey reveals shocking suicide rates
Data from the survey led by Trevor Project, an American nonprofit organization reveals over 34,00 trans youth between the ages of 13 and 24 showed alarming suicide attempts, anxiety, and depression. The survey was conducted on the state level and released this Thursday. Additionally, those from states such as Arkansas, California, Texas, and New York showed higher suicide rates.
The survey revealed about 44 percent of LGBTQ+ people were considering suicide. Among them, 14 percent attempted to take their lives. Additionally, 54 percent of trans and non-binary considered suicide. Among them, 19 percent attempted suicide. The data also revealed that a total of 70 percent of LGBTQ+ youth were facing discrimination. 62 percent revealed they were unable to access and obtain mental health care.

Moreover, the study also revealed the highest rate of non-binary youth considering suicide seriously was 56 percent in Texas. The rates are 54 percent in Pennsylvania and Florida and 51 percent in Illinois. It also revealed that about 16 to 20 percent of non-binary and trans youth in these states attempted suicide. The report was released following the rising restrictions on the rights of the LGBTQ+. As per Washington Post, a total of 150 anti-trans bills were submitted in 2022. Susan Williams, the founder of Transformation Post stated the alarming rates were not surprising. She added that her 16-year-old trans son removed all social media apps from his phone for avoiding the news.
