The Sun’s rampant activity is likely to peak earlier than expected

The impending peak in the Sun’s activity cycle will occur much sooner than previously predicted, according to a new study. According to Priyansh Jaswal, Chitradeep Saha, and Dibyendu Nandy of the Center of Excellence in Space Sciences India, the peak in solar activity is expected to occur in January 2024.

This is much earlier than the previous official prediction of maximum solar activity in July 2025. According to the findings, there may be better ways to predict the Sun’s behavior than the methods previously used to make official predictions about the current solar cycle, solar cycle 25.

Solar cycles have always been a mystery, and no one knows what causes them. In layman’s terms, the magnetic field of the Sun reverses polarity every 11 years. This polarity reversal is accompanied by a rise and fall in solar activity such as sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections.

The point at which the poles switch places is known as the solar maximum, and it is characterized by a peak in activity. After a few years, the solar minimum occurs, and the Sun reduces its activity before gearing up for the next maximum.

The 25th solar cycle may be the strongest in history

The scientists use a number of sunspots that speckle the face of the sun to track and predict when the next maximum will occur.

The most recent solar minimum, which marked the end of solar cycle 24, occurred in 2019. Solar cycle 24 was relatively quiet, and the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) predicted that solar cycle 25 would be similarly quiet, peaking in July 2025.

However, nothing went according to plan. Solar activity has exceeded official predictions since it began to rise, and solar cycle 25 is now expected to be among the strongest since records began in 1755.

In their predictions, NASA’s Robert Leamon and Scott McIntosh of the US National Center for Atmospheric Research predict that the solar maximum will be stronger than expected and will occur in mid to late 2024.

The NOAA revised its prediction last month, stating that the maximum peak is now likely to occur between January and October of 2024.
