Breezy Explainer: What will happen if T20 World Cup final between England and Pakistan is washed out?

England and Pakistan will face each other at the mighty MCG in the T20 World Cup 2022 Finals. In the first semi-final, Pakistan easily defeated Kane Williamson’s Team New Zealand by seven wickets at the SCG in Sydney. In comparison, England crushed Rohit Sharma’s Team India by 10 wickets in Adelaide. Thus, on Sunday, the big event’s final match will pit the winning teams against one another (November 13).

The grand finale will take place at Melbourne’s illustrious Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and it’s expected to be a close game. Recently, a JosButtler-less Three Lions team played Pakistan in a seven-match T20I series, which England won 4-3. It would be intriguing to see which team beats the opposition this time and joins West Indies as the second team to win the T20 World Cup twice.

What happens if the T20 World Cup final is washed out?

Rain has affected many games at the current T20 World Cup in Australia, therefore there is a good chance that it may affect the final match at the MCG as well. The game will be played the next day, or on Monday. However, Pakistan and England will be crowned joint victors if the weather also prevents play on the reserve day.

Extension play and ICC rules and play

As per the tournament rules, the finale must have at least ten overs to be bowled by each team in order to reach a conclusion and adjudge a winner. The finalists will also get an additional two hours of extra time on the reserve day for the match’s completion.

Words of the Captain

“Thanks to the crowd,” remarked Pakistani captain Babar Azam during the post-match presentation after his team defeated New Zealand. ” We feel like we’re playing at home. Got a good start with the first 6 overs with the ball. Later on, the ball didn’t come on well. Fast bowlers finished well. We planned before going that we’ll utilize the powerplay. He’s a young guy and showing his aggression (Haris). He’s playing very well. We’re going to enjoy this moment. But at the same time have a focus on the T20 World Cup final.”

The English captain Buttler said after a decisive victory in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup, “I think the character we have shown since then (England’s loss against Ireland) – it has been amazing. We came here very excited, there was a very good feeling. Everyone from 1 to 11 – stood up today. We always want to start fast and aggressively. Rashid was batting at 11, that’s incredible to know that we have such depth. Hales used the dimensions well and he has shown his form. He was brilliant today. It’s important to enjoy this, it was a brilliant performance from us. I think we need to give special credit to Jordan, to bowl 3 overs at the death coming into the semi-final, it was a tough job. He handled the pressure towards the end pretty well, especially bowling against a world-class player like Hardik Pandya.”
