NBA bans Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter for violating league's gaming rules

The NBA has imposed a lifetime ban on Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter for violating the league’s gambling rules. On Wednesday, they issued a statement announcing their judgment. Porter, 24, hasn’t played since March 25, when the NBA opened an inquiry into his betting irregularities.

Porter hasn’t been in a game since the Raptors intentionally removed him from the lineup against the Brooklyn Nets on the same night.

According to ESPN, the NBA looked into Jontay’s betting troubles in two games on January 26 and March 20. ESPN said that these two games saw an increase in betting interest, making them the highest-earning nights.

On Wednesday morning, Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted the league’s statement on X, revealing that Porter leaked confidential information about his health status to a known NBA bettor before the Raptors’ game on March 20.

Another acquaintance of Porter, who was also a seasoned NBA bookmaker, placed a $80,000 parlay proposition bet online with the potential to win $1.1 million, betting that Porter would underperform in the March 20 game.

Wojnarowski confirms the NBA’s decision to impose a lifetime ban on Jontay for his involvement in gambling.

Colorado gambling officials are now examining Jontay. According to Action Network, Jontay allegedly placed over 1,000 bets totaling millions of dollars between 2021 and 2023 using a VIP FanDuel account registered in Colorado.

REPORT: Jontay Porter allegedly owned & operated a FanDuel VIP account that wagered millions of dollars from 2021-23, which did NOT include any NBA or college basketball bets.

According to Action Network, the NBA prohibits all types of betting for players and workers, although it does not explicitly prohibit betting on other sports. Porter is said to have played for three separate NBA G League teams during the time he is suspected of placing these alleged wagers.

Colorado gambling authorities have requested all state sportsbooks to disclose details on any accounts that Jontay may have managed, with reports due by Monday, according to Action Network. Colorado gaming regulators’ inquiry into Jontay is still ongoing.
