This new feature is very similar to the fall detection on the Apple watch which dials 911 if the user does not respond.

Several reports prove that fall detection on Apple devices is saving several people from near-fatal incidents. Similarly, this new feature that can detect car crashes can do the same. While this may seem like a new feature, it is old news to Google Pixel users. Google uses the location from the phone in addition to nearby sounds and motion sensors for detecting car crashes. The feature then alerts the emergency services with an approximate location.
