After years of investing in AI-powered autonomous technology, automakers are now focusing on technology that allows for a “hyper-personalized” experience while purchasing and driving automobiles, according to Aakash Arora, a managing director at Boston Consulting Group. “They’re trying to figure out ‘if I could get to this level of customer experience, it can differentiate me in the market,'” he added of automakers.
For instance, Cerence, which makes AI-powered virtual assistants, is set to announce a partnership with Volkswagen, and Israel-based Cipia is expected to unveil a system that monitors signs of distraction and drowsiness in drivers. Many automakers are now using AI at various phases of production to save costs, according to Wendy Bauer, vice president of automotive and manufacturing at Amazon Web Services, which has BMW and Toyota as customers.
She believes that artificial intelligence can help carmakers save money by speeding up vehicle development and assuring better quality checks throughout manufacture. PC and smartphone manufacturers are also expected to demonstrate how their devices include AI, which chipmakers such as Intel and AMD believe will provide a new revenue stream.
