Instagram's Twitter rival 'Threads' to launch on July 6: Reports

According to a listing in Apple Inc.’s App Store, Instagram’s widely anticipated Twitter rival is set to launch on Thursday. According to screenshots on the App Store page, the Threads app will function similarly to Twitter, with text-based messages that can be liked, commented on, and shared. People will be able to continue to follow the profiles they follow on Instagram while using the same user name. Instagram, which is owned by Meta Platforms Inc., refused to comment.

What is Threads?: Instagram’s Twitter rival

With the launch, Meta hopes to capitalize on Twitter’s issues since Elon Musk took over the social media service last year. Twitter’s easing content filtering regulations, as well as the requirement of a monthly subscription cost to be designated as a genuine account, are among the concerns that have enraged users and prompted them to seek alternate platforms. There are also issues with site dependability. On Saturday, Twitter began temporarily limiting the number of posts that users can see.

Twitter’s current competitors, such as Mastodon and Bluesky, are still young and haven’t yet built viable networks. For months, Instagram has been promoting its upcoming app with various celebrities and influencers, hoping to generate interest when it comes.

The app is available for “pre-order” and is “expected” on Thursday, according to the App Store listing. There, ‘Threads’ is described as “where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today, to what’ll be trending tomorrow.” It’ll function similarly to Twitter, with text-based posts that can be liked, commented on, and shared with users, who will be able to retain their Instagram usernames. Users will also be able to follow accounts they follow on Instagram.
