Project Stargate: Softbank, Oracle, and OpenAI to build $500 billion worth AI infrastructure under Trump administration

In a landmark announcement that signals a new era for artificial intelligence development in the United States, President Donald Trump unveiled ‘Project Stargate,’ a massive $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative backed by some of technology’s biggest names.

Historic partnership

During a White House ceremony on Tuesday, just one day after his second-term inauguration, Trump revealed the collaboration between Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, enterprise technology leader Oracle, and AI pioneer OpenAI. The high-profile event was attended by industry titans Sam Altman of OpenAI, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison.

“This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential,” Trump said in remarks at the White House.

Investment details

According to SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, the venture will begin with an initial investment of $100 billion, scaling up to $500 billion over four years. The ambitious project aims to address the growing demands of AI computing infrastructure and associated power requirements.

Strategic implementation

The initiative will focus on developing both physical and virtual infrastructure, including what Trump described as “colossal data centers.” Initial construction is already underway in Texas, highlighting the state’s emerging role as a technological hub rivaling California.

Expanded partnership network

In a subsequent announcement on X, OpenAI revealed additional details about the project’s structure and partnerships. The company stated that SoftBank and OpenAI would serve as lead partners, with SoftBank managing financial aspects while OpenAI oversees operations.

The UAE’s MGX technology fund was identified as a fourth major investor, alongside technology partnerships with industry leaders including Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Oracle.

OpenAI emphasized the project’s strategic importance, stating that it “will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies.”

The announcement had immediate market implications, with SoftBank’s shares surging more than eight percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The news coincided with significant changes in AI policy, as Trump repealed his predecessor’s executive order on AI oversight guidelines.

Future applications

During the ceremony, Oracle’s Larry Ellison highlighted the potential medical applications of the initiative, specifically mentioning “early cancer detection with a blood test” as one of many possible innovations.

The announcement came at a pivotal moment, following Trump’s inauguration ceremony, which was attended by tech industry leaders including Apple’s Tim Cook, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

The massive scale of Project Stargate, combined with the caliber of its participating organizations, positions it as potentially one of the most significant technological infrastructure projects in U.S. history, with implications for both domestic innovation and global AI leadership.
