US boy correctly diagnosed by ChatGPT after 17 doctors over 3 years failed to do so

The emergence of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has made it easier for many sectors to complete repetitive activities while freeing up time for more important duties.

The importance of the tool was further highlighted after a woman decided to consult ChatGPT to learn the diagnosis for her four-year-old son, who was experiencing tooth pain and was also not growing in height.

“I have to give him Motrin (pain relieving drug) every day, or he has these gigantic meltdowns. If he had Motrin, he was totally fine,” the mother of the boy identified as Alex- Courtney said to Today.com.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alex started to chew things which caused him pain. It forced Courtney, who has another child besides Alex, to look for a doctor. She searched for a cure for her son’s discomfort and other symptoms for three years without success. (rentalsfloridakeys.com)

We saw so many doctors. We ended up in the ER at one point. I kept pushing. I really spent the night on the (computer). going through all these things,” she added.

After seeing 17 doctors she got the answer from ChatGPT

She soon saw that Alex had stopped getting taller, too, and she spoke to the doctor about it, who suggested that it might be a COVID-19 side effect.

“He’d grown a little bit. He would lead with his right foot and just bring his left foot along for the ride,” she said.

After seeing 17 doctors, a breakthrough eventually materialized—albeit from an unexpected place. In order to determine the cause of her son’s toothache and growth impediment, Courtney made the decision to seek assistance from ChatGPT.

She discovered that Alex had tethered cord syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, after sharing the symptoms on ChatGPT. She later joined a Facebook community made up of people whose kids also had the disease.

“I went line by line of everything that was in his (MRI notes) and plugged it into ChatGPT. I put the note in there about. How he wouldn’t sit crisscross applesauce. To me, that was a huge trigger (that) a structural thing could be wrong,” she said.

Courtney made an appointment with a neurosurgeon and informed the doctor that she thought her son might have tethered cord syndrome. The medical professional identified Alex’s experience after looking at the MRI. A few weeks later, Alex underwent surgery to treat the issue.

This is not the first time that ChatGPT has aided in a medical condition’s diagnosis.

What is tethered cord syndrome?

According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, tethered cord syndrome develops when the tissue in the spinal cord forms attachments, restricting the spinal cord’s motions and resulting in improper stretching of the body part.
