Self-checkout snafu sparks bizarre outburst, police involvement, and viral Reddit thread
LOS ANGELES — A routine trip to Walmart took a surreal turn when a customer, after mistakenly charging himself for 999 avocados, called the police and accused the retail giant of “robbing” him.
The peculiar incident was shared by a Walmart employee on Reddit’s r/Walmart community under the username “Lore-Archivist,” where it quickly caught traction. The story has since drawn hundreds of comments from fellow retail workers and shoppers who’ve experienced similarly bizarre moments at the self-checkout lanes.
From $9.99 to $1,300: A costly typo
The customer reportedly came to the self-checkout kiosk with multiple items, one of which rang up at $19.99 instead of $9.99. A Walmart team leader corrected the error, but more issues followed.
Then came the avocados.
According to “Lore-Archivist,” the man apparently intended to ring up 9 avocados but accidentally entered 999. His total bill shot up to over $1,300, triggering panic.
“He freaked out and started yelling that Walmart was robbing him,” the employee wrote. Despite efforts to explain the error and deescalate the situation, the man insisted on calling 911.
“Calling the cops on yourself”
What followed was, in the employee’s words, a “whole circus.” The customer showed police the self-checkout screen and repeated his claim that Walmart was robbing him. Store staff attempted to reason with the man, but he reportedly refused to leave unless the store compensated him for “pain, suffering, and distress.”
Eventually, police officers — the very ones he summoned — warned him of potential trespassing charges. When he still refused to leave, they handcuffed him and escorted him outside.
