Copenhagen to reward eco-friendly tourists with free lunches and more

Copenhagen has launched an innovative program called CopenPay to promote eco-friendly tourism

Running from July 15 to August 11, this initiative rewards tourists for engaging in sustainable activities such as picking up litter, biking, and using public transportation. By providing proof of these eco-friendly actions, like a public transport ticket, visitors can earn rewards including free lunches, coffees, glasses of wine, museum tours, and kayak rentals.

What is CopenPay?

The primary goal of CopenPay is to reduce the environmental impact of tourism without increasing visitor numbers. Currently, 24 local businesses are participating, offering these rewards without any government funding. This reflects the strong collective commitment of the city and local businesses to sustainability.

If the program proves successful, it may continue throughout the year. Copenhagen aims to set a new standard for sustainable tourism, demonstrating that being environmentally responsible can also be enjoyable. This initiative is a significant step towards making tourism more eco-friendly and ensuring a sustainable future for the city.

Known for its stunning architecture, Copenhagen boasts iconic landmarks such as the colorful Nyhavn harbour, Rosenborg Castle, and Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish royal family. The city is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, featuring an extensive network of bike lanes and a robust public transportation system. Visitors can explore the city on two wheels, experiencing a unique blend of old-world charm and modern design. Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, offers a fun escape with rides, gardens, and performances.

Copenhagen’s culinary scene is world-class, highlighted by numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, including the renowned Noma, famous for its innovative approach to Nordic cuisine. The city’s food markets, such as Torvehallerne, provide a taste of local flavours and fresh produce.

Art and culture enthusiasts will find a wealth of museums and galleries to explore, including the National Museum of Denmark and the contemporary art museum ARKEN. With CopenPay, Copenhagen not only continues to lead in sustainable practices but also enhances the visitor experience, making eco-friendly tourism both rewarding and enjoyable.
