A gigantic iceberg, reportedly as large as the one that sank the Titanic, is drifting dangerously close to Innaarsuit, a small fishing village off Greenland’s western coast. Stationary Iceberg Poses Unusual Risk
While icebergs typically drift along with ocean currents, this one has remained stationary for more than a week, prompting growing concern among officials and residents.
“It’s just sitting there,” said Dennis Lehtonen, a local worker. “It hasn’t moved an inch.”
The unusual stillness increases the chance that the iceberg could suddenly break apart, sending large chunks crashing into the water, triggering tsunami-like waves capable of devastating homes, infrastructure, and low-lying areas.
Emergency Measures Implemented
Authorities have issued a high alert advisory, urging residents to stay vigilant both at sea and on land:
- Fishermen have been warned to keep their distance while sailing near the iceberg.
- On land, people have been asked to avoid gathering in groups while visiting public areas like local stores.

“Emergency services encourage families not to go in a group towards the store, while at the same time asking people with walking difficulties to be extra careful when walking towards the store,” the New York Post quoted local officials as saying.
As a precaution, the village’s fish processing factory has been temporarily shut down, affecting the local economy.

While many villagers remain fearful of a potential disaster, others see the iceberg as a natural marvel. “Some residents are actually excited to see such a large iceberg so close,” said a municipal worker.
Past Incidents: A Familiar but Unpredictable Threat
This isn’t the first time Innaarsuit has faced such a threat. In 2018, a giant 11-ton iceberg loomed near the village. It was so massive it was visible from space, prompting the evacuation of residents to higher ground. Fortunately, it drifted away without causing any damage.
