Advertisement featuring airline’s aircraft pulled after deadly accident
A front-page newspaper advertisement featuring an Air India aircraft has drawn widespread attention after a tragic coincidence—hours after its publication, the airline’s Flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board.
The ad and the accident: An eerie parallel
On the morning of June 12, Mid-Day, a newspaper popular in Gujarat, ran a promotional advertisement for KidZania’s upcoming Father’s Day weekend event. The ad depicted a cartoon cityscape with a prominently placed Air India plane emerging from a building—an image that took on a grim tone just hours later.
That afternoon, Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route to London Gatwick, crashed moments after departing from Ahmedabad. The aircraft struck the Ahmedabad Medical College hostel, killing five people on the ground in addition to most passengers and crew.
The timing of the advertisement and the subsequent disaster led to social media speculation, with some users drawing comparisons to The Simpsons—the animated series known for its uncanny, sometimes accidental, predictions of real-world events.
KidZania clarifies: “A crazy coincidence”
KidZania India, the company behind the advertisement, quickly addressed the unsettling parallel, calling it a “crazy coincidence.”
In a statement to NDTV, the company explained that the aircraft image was part of a long-standing partnership with Air India. The visual was a stylized representation of the Air India Aviation Academy, an interactive exhibit at KidZania’s global locations where children role-play aviation careers.
“Regarding the advertisement published in Mid-Day, we clarify that the aircraft image is a globally recognized architectural element across KidZania centers worldwide and represents our Aviation Academy—an educational initiative in partnership with leading airlines, including Air India,” the company said.
KidZania emphasized that the ad was part of a pre-planned summer campaign and had been submitted for publication well before the crash. Out of respect for the victims, the company has paused further promotions featuring the aircraft imagery.
Air India’s partnership with KidZania
The collaboration between Air India and KidZania dates back to July 2024, when the airline announced the launch of its Aviation Academy at KidZania’s Delhi-NCR location.
In a tweet at the time, Air India wrote:
“Dreams take off here! A new chapter in aviation excellence begins with the grand launch of the Air India Aviation Academy at @KidZaniaIndia in Delhi-NCR. Whether navigating a flight simulator or learning about airport operations, KidZania’s Air India Aviation Academy is where dreams of flying begin.”
The promotional video attached to the tweet showed a life-sized model of an Air India plane protruding from a KidZania building—a design element that was later adapted into the cartoon-style ad.
A nation mourns as investigation begins
As authorities work to determine the cause of the crash, tributes pour in for the victims. KidZania India expressed its condolences, stating:
“Our heartfelt condolences are with all affected. We stand in solidarity with the families grieving their loved ones.”
The incident has reignited discussions on aviation safety, corporate branding sensitivities, and the strange ways in which real life can sometimes mirror even the most innocuous advertisements.
