“It’s Just Insane”: Lionel Messi Finally Breaks Silence on Viral Lamine Yamal Baby Photo Ahead of 2026 World Cup Final

As Argentina and Spain prepare to clash in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final in New Jersey this Sunday, one storyline is eclipsing all tactical breakdowns and historic milestones: a nearly two-decade-old photograph.

In what feels like a glitch in the footballing matrix, an iconic 2007 image of a 20-year-old Lionel Messi bathing a six-month-old infant for a charity calendar has recently resurfaced and taken the internet by storm. That infant? Spain’s 19-year-old breakout sensation, Lamine Yamal. Now, just 18 years later, the two are set to face off on the sport’s biggest stage.

Speaking at the FIFA Fanatics Fest in New York on Friday, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner finally shared his reaction to the unbelievable coincidence.

“That photo is incredible,” Messi told the crowd. “I took a picture with him when he was a baby… the fact that we’re both playing in the World Cup now is crazy.”

A Twist of Fate 19 Years in the Making

The photograph was captured in the Camp Nou dressing room by photographer Joan Monfort as part of a joint charity initiative by the local newspaper Sport and UNICEF. At the time, Messi was just establishing himself as Barcelona’s golden boy. Yamal’s family had simply won a local raffle for the opportunity.

Fast forward to 2026, and the narrative has shifted dramatically. Yamal has shattered records for both club and country, stepping into the massive void left by Messi at FC Barcelona and driving a revitalized Spanish national team to the brink of global glory.

Despite the high stakes of Sunday’s final, Messi was effusive in his praise for the young winger, noting his deep affection for their shared club.

“He’s one of the best in the world right now,” Messi noted. “I wish him luck because his success will be Barcelona’s success. He’s a tremendous player… a global star. He’s 19 years old and has his whole career ahead of him.”

However, the Argentine captain was quick to remind everyone of the task at hand: “We’ll try to keep him from playing at his best. Spain has a great team, not just him. We have our own weapons, too… I wish him the best, but we’ll give it our all to ensure he doesn’t become champion this time.”

The Dressing Room Reaction

The disbelief isn’t limited to fans and pundits; it extends to the players themselves. Spain midfielder Mikel Merino echoed the sentiment of millions who thought the image was digitally altered when it first reappeared on social media.

“The first time I saw it, I thought it was AI and that it wasn’t even real,” Merino admitted on Friday. “It’s unbelievable that two of the best players to have played the game—and hopefully Lamine, in the future, will be one of those—share a picture like that. Hopefully, we’re going to see a very bright final with those two protagonists at their best, playing and giving all the fans a great spectacle.”

Split Loyalties and Historic Stakes

For Barcelona loyalists, Sunday’s final presents a massive emotional conflict. The streets of the Catalan capital are currently a mosaic of Messi’s Inter Miami and Argentina kits mixed heavily with Yamal’s Spain and Barça jerseys.

Joan Monfort, the 58-year-old photographer who captured the fateful image, perfectly encapsulated the dilemma facing fans as he considers travelling to New Jersey for the match.

“My heart is split. I don’t know if I want Messi or Yamal to win,” Monfort explained. “I have an everlasting love for the best player of all time [Messi], but Yamal has broken the mold here.” He noted that Yamal represents a new, diverse Spain, honouring his parents’ heritage from Morocco and Equatorial Guinea. “Maybe they can both win. I wouldn’t rule it out after everything we have seen.”

What’s on the Line This Sunday?

Beyond the poetry of the photograph, the 2026 final carries immense historical weight for both men:

  • Lionel Messi (39): Aims to cement his legacy by becoming the first captain in history to win back-to-back FIFA World Cups.
  • Lamine Yamal (19): Looks to become the second-youngest player ever to start and win a World Cup final, capping off a blistering rise to international superstardom.

Whether it’s destiny, a statistical anomaly, or just the beautiful game writing its own impossible scripts, Sunday’s final is set up to be a generational handover, or the ultimate last laugh for the undisputed greatest of all time.
