Ethan Guo’s Unannounced Landing Sparks Legal Action in Chile
King George Island, Antarctica – Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old pilot from Memphis, Tennessee, was detained on King George Island in Antarctica after allegedly violating aviation protocols by filing a false flight plan and flying without proper authorisation. Guo, who is on a mission to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents, diverted his course on June 28 while en route from Chile to the South Pole.
Authorities say the teen departed from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in Punta Arenas, Chile, but changed his course mid-flight and landed in Antarctica, without approval from Chilean or international aviation authorities.
Prosecutors Cite Multiple Aviation Violations
Cristian Crisosto Rifo, Regional Prosecutor of the Magallanes region, said Guo’s unauthorized detour not only breached Chile’s Aeronautical Code, but also contravened international regulations on Antarctic airspace.
“This not only violated the Aeronautical Code but also multiple national and international regulations regarding routes to Antarctica and access to the white continent,” Rifo stated.
Officials deemed Guo’s actions a serious threat to the restricted and environmentally sensitive airspace over Antarctica and surrounding regions.
Why Was Ethan Guo Flying Solo: Raising Funds for Pediatric Cancer
Guo began his ambitious journey in May 2024, departing from Memphis with the goal of visiting all seven continents and raising $1 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His campaign was inspired by a cousin’s battle with cancer.
“He inspired me to take life more seriously and join the fight against cancer,” Guo said in a previous statement. “I want to use every opportunity to raise awareness of childhood cancer and the necessity to increase research efforts.”
The young pilot has gained significant public support, amassing over one million followers on Instagram, where he shares updates from his global solo flight.
Defense Cites Weather and Technical Complications
Guo’s attorney, Karina Ulloa, defended the teen’s actions, claiming the unexpected Antarctic landing was due to unforeseen flight complications during what she called an “exploratory flight.”
“He faced complications while flying, which led to the unplanned landing,” Ulloa said.
Guo is currently being held on King George Island, unable to return to the Chilean mainland due to adverse weather that has grounded commercial flights in the area.
Investigation Launched; Teen Ordered to Remain in Chile
Once weather permits, Guo will be flown back to Punta Arenas, where he will face formal investigation. Chilean authorities have launched a 90-day probe into the incident.
Guo is being investigated under two articles of Chile’s Aeronautical Code, including:
- Landing in Chilean territory without legitimate authorization
- Submitting a false flight plan
During the course of the investigation, Guo will be required to remain in Chile and cannot continue his world flight.
What’s Next For Ethan Guo?
While no further charges have been announced, prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of violating flight regulations, especially over environmentally protected zones like Antarctica.
As aviation experts and social media followers continue to watch closely, the case raises broader questions about youthful ambition, aviation safety, and the ethical use of global airspace for personal campaigns—even those tied to charitable causes.
