Construction workers discover inert grenade near Terminal 1
Construction workers at San Diego International Airport discovered what they believe to be “an old, inert hand grenade” near Terminal 1, a Port of San Diego official said on Thursday afternoon.
Despite the discovery, airport operations continued as normal, with only a minor reduction in traffic—limiting access to Terminal 1 to a single lane.
No evacuation orders issued
Authorities did not issue any evacuation orders, and flights remained unaffected.
After the grenade was found, San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Bomb Squad and law enforcement officials responded to the scene.
“The area around the terminal has been cordoned off, and authorities are conducting a thorough assessment of the situation,” officials stated.
As a precautionary measure, airport traffic was restricted to one lane, though the rest of the airport remained operational.
Grenade safely removed by authorities
By 1:30 p.m., authorities cleared the site, and the city’s Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) safely removed the device without incident.
Officials assured travelers that the airport remains safe and there is no ongoing threat following the discovery.
