A recently unsealed affidavit has revealed that a tip from an anonymous Reddit user played a significant role in advancing the investigation into the Brown University shooting and the killing of an MIT professor.
According to court filings from the Providence Police Department reviewed by multiple US media outlets, the Reddit user shared specific details online about a vehicle seen near the Brown University shooting scene, information that had not yet been made public. Investigators later traced the user, interviewed them, and corroborated the tip using surveillance footage, rental car records, and additional evidence.
The suspect, Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, was later identified as the primary person of interest in both the Brown University shooting and the murder of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro in Brookline, Massachusetts. Authorities said Valente was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, ending a multi-state manhunt.
Did Reddit “solve” the case?
Online claims quickly went viral, suggesting that “Reddit solved the case before police.” Law enforcement officials have pushed back against that narrative.
Investigators told The Associated Press and The Boston Globe that the Reddit post was one of several leads, alongside license plate readers, surveillance cameras, ballistic analysis, and coordination between multiple agencies.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha confirmed the role of the tip in an affidavit, stating:
“On December 16, 2025, the tip command center received information from an anonymous source referencing a Reddit post from the Providence sub-Reddit. The then-anonymous tipster stated the Reddit poster said they saw the suspected shooter walking in the area. Investigators obtained a copy of the Reddit post.”
While police rejected the idea that social media independently cracked the case, officials acknowledged that the tip was unusually detailed and timely. Neronha publicly credited the anonymous individual with providing information that significantly accelerated the investigation, according to reporting by The Boston Globe.
The Reddit user later came forward to the police on December 17 and identified himself as John.
How John helped investigators
According to the affidavit, John told investigators that he first encountered the suspect inside a bathroom on the ground floor of the Barus and Holley Building at Brown University on December 13, 2025, between approximately 1:45 and 2:00 pm.
John described the man’s clothing as “inappropriate and inadequate for the weather,” noting that his jacket and gloves appeared flimsy.
The affidavit states that John described:
- A baggy jacket
- At least two layers of shirts, one possibly branded L.L. Bean
- Pants and shoes resembling those worn by kitchen or restaurant workers and appearing to be of poor quality
John also reported that the suspect wore a large face mask covering the lower half of his face. He believed the individual was wearing glasses and described his complexion as “cinnamon-colored,” with weathered skin, slightly chubby facial features, and brown eyes.
Suspicious behavior near the Rhode Island Historical Society
John told investigators he followed the suspect after seeing him exit the building and walk up Manning Street. He later observed the individual near the Rhode Island Historical Society, where the suspect approached a grey or silver Nissan sedan with Florida license plates.
John said the car’s lights activated when the suspect approached, suggesting the use of a key fob. The suspect then abruptly turned away from the vehicle and walked in the opposite direction.
When John approached the sedan, he noticed two fanny pack–style bags on the rear passenger-side floorboard. He remained in the area and observed the suspect repeatedly circling back, changing directions each time their paths crossed.
John described the encounter as “a game of cat and mouse.”
According to the affidavit, the two later crossed paths again on George Street, at which point the suspect ran in the opposite direction. John briefly followed, slowed his pace, and then walked past the suspect.
