In an astonishing stroke of luck, 34-year-old Tiffany Butler from Texas hit the jackpot during one of her regular dumpster diving excursions. Known for her dedication to rescuing usable goods from discarded items, Butler recently unearthed a bag full of brand-new New Balance sneakers, each valued at over $119.34. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Butler shared with What’s The Jam. “It’s all about chance. Stores discard items unexpectedly, so you must be in the right place at the right time.”
A lucrative find
Butler’s discovery didn’t stop at sneakers. The bag also contained a variety of other brand-new items, including water bottles, T-shirts, and socks, all from New Balance. Her find underscores the potential hidden treasures that can be found in discarded goods, an endeavor Butler undertakes two to three times a week.
Over the past two years, Butler has transformed her dumpster diving hobby into a profitable venture, earning approximately $76,000 by reselling the items she finds. Her success story is a testament to the adage that one person’s trash can indeed be another’s treasure. Butler’s excitement over her recent find was palpable as she shared her haul with her three million social media followers. Her posts highlight the incredible value that can be salvaged from what others might consider worthless.
Global phenomena of hidden treasures
Butler’s story is not an isolated incident. Around the world, there have been numerous cases of individuals finding unexpected treasures in the trash. In 2023, for instance, a ragpicker in Bengaluru, India, stumbled upon bundles of US dollars worth $3 million in a pile of garbage. However, the notes were later discovered to be counterfeit.
Salman Sheikh, the ragpicker, recounted his experience: “I was going about my day when I made a shocking discovery. Around noon, I found a bag overflowing with cash. It was so overwhelming, that I fainted. I’d never seen that much money before in my life, and I knew it wasn’t Indian rupees.”
Butler’s story, while unique in its own right, adds to the fascinating narrative of people finding incredible value in the most unexpected places.
