Linda Yaccarino Steps Down as CEO of X Amid Turbulent Musk Era

Why did Linda Yaccarino leave X?

Linda Yaccarino, the chief executive of X (formerly Twitter), announced on Wednesday that she is stepping down, marking the end of a challenging two-year tenure under Elon Musk’s ownership. Her departure, while not entirely unexpected, signals a deeper transition for the social media platform, especially following its integration with Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI.

In a farewell post on X, the 61-year-old executive expressed gratitude to Musk, calling her role “the opportunity of a lifetime” but stopped short of citing a reason for her exit. Two people familiar with internal discussions confirmed Yaccarino had already informed X employees of her decision prior to the latest controversies involving xAI’s chatbot Grok.

What was Linda Yaccarino’s role at X?

Yaccarino was hired in May 2023 to lead the business operations of X, just months after Musk’s $44 billion takeover of Twitter. At the time, the platform was losing advertisers rapidly amid Musk’s policy overhauls and volatile public behavior. A seasoned media executive from NBCUniversal, Yaccarino brought with her a reputation for strong advertiser relationships and a deep understanding of brand safety—a critical skill as major companies distanced themselves from the platform.

She was responsible for:

  • Restoring advertiser trust amid a surge in offensive and unchecked content.
  • Lobbying lawmakers on online child safety legislation.
  • Managing day-to-day operations while serving as a buffer between Musk and stakeholders.
  • Rebranding efforts, including navigating through Twitter’s transformation into “X.”

What challenges did Linda Yaccarino face?

Yaccarino’s tenure was defined by her attempts to professionalize a company in perpetual flux. She walked into a fragmented organization reeling from layoffs that slashed three-quarters of its workforce and a platform destabilized by relaxed moderation policies.

Key challenges included:

  • Ad revenue collapse: Following Musk’s takeover, many advertisers paused or pulled their campaigns, fearing association with hate speech or misinformation.
  • Brand erosion: Musk’s rebranding of Twitter to “X” alienated longtime users and erased a globally recognized internet identity.
  • Public outbursts by Musk: From using profanities against advertisers to engaging in online feuds, Musk’s actions often undermined Yaccarino’s efforts to present X as a reliable platform for advertisers and policymakers.
  • Rise of Grok and xAI: The integration of xAI into X added further complexity. Grok, xAI’s chatbot, recently triggered outrage by making antisemitic remarks, spotlighting the content moderation gaps Yaccarino struggled to contain.

While Yaccarino kept a diplomatic tone publicly, insiders say she bore the brunt of internal discontent, legal scrutiny, and financial pressure behind the scenes.

How did the merger with xAI impact her role?

In March 2025, Musk announced that X had been sold to his AI company xAI in an all-stock deal valuing X at $33 billion and xAI at $80 billion. The unusual internal restructuring folded X under the broader AI vision Musk is pursuing, effectively diluting Yaccarino’s authority.

At a company meeting in May, she discussed integrating engineering teams and technical resources between X and xAI. However, this merger was seen by many as a precursor to her eventual exit. “This was an inevitability when X got layered under xAI,” said Lou Paskalis, CEO of AJL Advisory and a longtime advertising executive.

What is Linda Yaccarino’s legacy at X?

Yaccarino’s primary achievement was winning back a significant share of the advertising business. At one point, she claimed that over 96% of top brand advertisers had returned to X, although not at their previous spending levels. Her media diplomacy and persistence paid off in bringing credibility back to a platform in crisis.

She also played a key role in navigating relationships with the federal government, especially during a time when Musk became an informal adviser to President Trump. Her alignment with political institutions helped X maintain some legitimacy during volatile times.

Yet her legacy is complicated. Despite her efforts, X remains deeply polarizing, plagued by content controversies and market uncertainty.

What happens next for X?

Yaccarino’s exit opens the door for a more AI-centric leadership at X, aligning the company more closely with Musk’s long-term vision for xAI. With Grok already integrated into the platform and further AI features expected, the platform may continue evolving into a hybrid between social media and generative AI.

Musk’s control over the platform appears tighter than ever. Historically, turnover among his top lieutenants at companies like Tesla and Boring Company has been high, and Yaccarino’s departure fits that pattern. With the exception of SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, few have managed long-term tenures in Musk’s orbit.

The future of X is now more unpredictable. Without Yaccarino’s stabilizing presence, Musk is likely to double down on AI expansion and free speech absolutism—policies that have alienated advertisers but energized certain user segments.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has stepped down after two tumultuous years managing the platform under Elon Musk. Brought on to stabilize the company and revive advertiser trust, she navigated Musk’s impulsive leadership, ad boycotts, and content moderation crises. Her exit comes months after Musk merged X with his AI company xAI, further shifting the company’s direction. While Yaccarino successfully lured some advertisers back, her departure underscores the ongoing volatility at X as it transforms into a more AI-driven platform.
