'We didn't intercept Indian drones because...': Pakistan defence minister comes up with weird logic

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has once again drawn international attention with controversial remarks, claiming that Pakistan deliberately allowed Indian drones to operate in its airspace to avoid revealing defensive positions—a statement that security analysts describe as an unusual justification for military inaction during a cross-border operation.

Strategic silence or face-saving measure?

Speaking before Pakistan’s Parliament on Friday, Asif offered a surprising explanation for Pakistan’s apparent failure to intercept Indian drones during Thursday’s border confrontation: “I can’t go into the details. But we didn’t intercept Indian drones during yesterday’s attack as we didn’t want to give away our defense positions.”

The minister’s comments come in the wake of what observers characterize as a decisive defeat for Pakistan following a 35-minute military exchange on May 8. The skirmish reportedly began as Pakistan’s attempt to retaliate against India’s earlier strikes on nine terror camps, an operation Indian authorities have described as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Military experts have questioned the strategic rationale behind Asif’s explanation, noting that modern air defense systems are typically designed to neutralize threats without compromising overall defensive posture.

Escalating rhetoric amid border tensions

Earlier on Friday, Asif had adopted a markedly more aggressive stance, threatening India with military action if diplomatic channels failed to resolve tensions.

“If India does not talk at the diplomatic and political table and [through diplomatic] channels, we will talk and respond with guns. Pakistan does not have time to wait and show patience. We have to stop India here,” the defense minister declared.

This rhetorical escalation follows Wednesday’s Operation Sindoor, during which India reportedly conducted precision strikes against multiple terrorist facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), which New Delhi characterized as a direct response to the Pahalgam attack.

Pattern of controversial statements

Friday’s remarks continue what regional observers describe as a pattern of unusual public statements from Pakistan’s defense minister. Asif recently faced international criticism after citing “social media content” as evidence to support claims that Pakistan had shot down Indian fighter jets during Operation Sindoor—assertions that were widely challenged by independent security analysts.

“Minister Asif appears to be employing increasingly creative narratives to explain Pakistan’s military setbacks,” said Dr. Rahul Bhatia, director of the South Asian Strategic Studies Institute. “These statements seem primarily designed for domestic consumption rather than as serious diplomatic or military communications.”

The minister’s comments have emerged as a focal point in Pakistan’s domestic narrative around the recent border hostilities, with government supporters characterizing them as strategic wisdom while opposition figures have questioned their credibility.

Regional context of escalating tensions

The exchange of military strikes represents one of the most significant escalations between the nuclear-armed neighbors in recent years. India’s Operation Sindoor targeted what New Delhi described as terrorist infrastructure responsible for planning and executing attacks on Indian territory.

The operation has generated substantial reaction within India, with numerous public figures, including actors Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, Chiranjeevi, and Anupam Kher publicly expressing support for the military action.

International diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions between the two countries continue, with several global powers urging restraint and a return to dialogue. Military analysts warn that the situation remains volatile, with both nations maintaining heightened alert levels along their shared border.

As Pakistan navigates the diplomatic and military aftermath of these exchanges, Minister Asif’s public statements will likely continue to shape both domestic perception and international understanding of Islamabad’s position in this ongoing conflict.
