World’s newest island forms in Japanese archipelago After an underwater volcanic eruption

A brand-new island has emerged from the depths of the Pacific Ocean, just off the shore of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, in a unique geological phenomenon. This unprecedented event, produced by an undersea volcanic eruption, has sparked worldwide interest and scientific curiosity. According to CNN, Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) was instrumental in reporting and photographing this natural phenomenon. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force took photographs of the island’s rapid construction on November 1.

These stunning images depict a very small eruption that sent a dark plume of ash billowing above the newly formed island, which is now officially recognized as part of the Ogasawara chain of islands. While the JMA had been actively monitoring volcanic activity in the region for some time, it was the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute that validated the date of the island-forming eruption, fixing it to October 30. The development of this new island was described by Professor Setsuya Nakada, a volcanologist at the University of Tokyo, to the Japan Times.

He indicated that this occurrence was caused by the steady accumulation of magma beneath the ocean’s surface. This molten material accumulated over time and eventually erupted, breaking through the water’s surface to form the island. This freshly formed island is located around 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of mainland Japan and only one kilometre from the historically significant Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was the scene of one of the Pacific’s most intense and significant engagements during World War II. Here, US Marines engaged tens of thousands of Japanese troops, resulting in a horrific loss of life on both sides, with over 7,000 Americans and 22,000 Japanese soldiers killed.
