Canadian-Bred Falcon Sells for $346,000 at Saudi Auction, Becoming 2026’s Most Expensive Bird

A rare Canadian-bred falcon has fetched 1.3 million Saudi riyals, roughly $346,000, at a prestigious auction north of Riyadh, making it the most expensive bird sold at this year’s event and the second-highest sale in the auction’s history.

The juvenile three-quarter gyr Super White falcon was bred by Jim Wilson Falcons in Ontario, Canada, before being offered at the seventh-night session of the International Falcon Breeders Auction in Malham, about 65 kilometers north of the Saudi capital.

The sale highlights the extraordinary value placed on elite falcons in the Gulf, where falconry is both a centuries-old cultural tradition and a highly competitive modern sport.

How much did the Canadian falcon sell for?

Bidding for the rare falcon began at 200,000 riyals. Competition quickly intensified, pushing the price into seven figures before Nova Falcon secured the bird for 1.3 million riyals.

That works out to approximately $346,000.

Shadeed Al Rashidi of Nova Falcon explained the purchase in a video released by the auction organizers.

“This bird is rare, and rare birds are priceless.”

The sale was also announced by Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Falcons, which described the bird as the world’s most expensive Mathlouth gyr pure falcon sold in 2026.

The distinction is particularly notable because the bird did not come from a Saudi breeding operation. It was bred thousands of miles away in Ontario, demonstrating the international nature of the modern falcon market.

Two Canadian-bred birds sold for 1.45 million riyals

The Ontario breeder had an even more successful evening, with a second bird also attracting significant interest.

A pure gyrfalcon chick from Jim Wilson Falcons sold for 150,000 riyals, after bidding opened at 40,000 riyals.

Together, the two Canadian-bred birds generated 1.45 million riyals, or roughly $386,000.

The results underscore the premium that specialist buyers are willing to pay for particular bloodlines, rarity and performance potential.

Why are falcons worth hundreds of thousands of dollars?

The price of a falcon can appear extraordinary to outsiders, but several factors determine its value.

Bloodline matters

Elite falcon breeding is highly specialized. Buyers pay close attention to a bird’s genetic lineage, species and physical characteristics.

Gyrfalcons, in particular, are prized among falconers for their size, strength and hunting abilities. Specific crosses and color variations can command substantially higher prices when they are considered rare or desirable.

The “Super White” coloring of the Canadian bird was another factor contributing to its appeal.

Performance can be valuable

These birds are not simply collector’s items.

Falconry and falcon racing have developed into major competitive activities in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Birds with desirable characteristics can potentially compete in high-value races and other events.

The International Falcon Breeders Auction provides buyers with access to birds bred by specialist falcon farms from around the world.

Saudi Arabia’s falconry culture explains the demand

Falconry has deep cultural roots in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Arabian Peninsula.

The practice has historically been associated with hunting and survival in desert environments, but it has also become an important part of regional heritage and identity.

Today, falconry operates at the intersection of tradition, sport, breeding and commerce.

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in preserving and promoting the country’s falconry heritage. The National Center for Falcons has helped organize events, breeding initiatives, auctions and competitions designed to support the sport.

The Malham auction is one of the most prominent examples of that international market.

It brings together:

  • Specialist falcon breeders
  • Professional falconers
  • Collectors
  • Racing enthusiasts
  • Buyers from Saudi Arabia and overseas

For breeders, the auction offers access to wealthy international buyers. For purchasers, it provides an opportunity to acquire birds with established bloodlines and competitive potential.

Did the Canadian falcon break the auction record?

No.

Although the 1.3 million-riyal sale was enormous, it fell short of the event’s all-time record.

That record remains 1.75 million riyals, approximately $467,000, paid in 2021 for a juvenile Ultra White three-quarter pure gyrfalcon.

The 2026 Canadian-bred bird did, however, surpass last year’s top sale of 1.2 million riyals.

That puts the latest sale in a remarkable position:

Auction milestonePrice
2021 record1.75 million riyals
2026 Canadian-bred Super White gyr1.3 million riyals
2025 top sale1.2 million riyals
Second Canadian-bred bird150,000 riyals
Two Canadian-bred birds combined1.45 million riyals

Falcon racing adds another dimension to the market

The financial appeal of elite falcons extends beyond the initial purchase.

Birds sold through the International Falcon Breeders Auction automatically qualify for popular falcon racing competitions in Saudi Arabia.

The country’s racing circuit offers substantial prize money, with approximately $12.5 million available across the season.

That helps explain why buyers may be prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a single bird.

A high-value falcon can represent more than a rare animal. For a professional owner or competitive falconer, it can be an investment in breeding, racing and future prize-winning potential.

The economics resemble other elite sporting markets, where pedigree and performance history can dramatically affect an athlete’s value.

The difference is that these competitors have wings.

The International Falcon Breeders Auction is still underway

The record-setting sale took place during the seventh night of the International Falcon Breeders Auction in Malham.

The event is scheduled to continue through August 25, with breeders and buyers from Saudi Arabia and other countries expected to participate.

More high-value sales could follow as additional birds are presented to buyers.

For Canadian breeder Jim Wilson Falcons, however, the event has already delivered an exceptional result: two birds from its Ontario operation generated 1.45 million riyals in a single evening.

What makes this sale significant?

The $346,000 sale is more than an eye-catching auction figure.

It illustrates how the global falcon market has evolved.

A bird bred in Ontario can be transported to Saudi Arabia and sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars to a specialist buyer because of its genetics, appearance and potential performance.

At the same time, the sale demonstrates the enduring economic power of falconry in the Gulf.

What began as a traditional hunting practice has developed into an international ecosystem involving specialist breeding farms, auctions, racing competitions and substantial prize money.

For the buyer, Nova Falcon, the calculation appears straightforward: rarity creates value.

And at Malham, that rarity was worth 1.3 million riyals.
