Tesla Roadster 2 Unveiled: Watch Elon Musk’s Flying Supercar, Price, Specs, and 2028 Release Date

After nearly a decade of delays, rumors, and wild promises, Elon Musk has finally delivered on the stuff of science fiction. The Tesla Roadster 2 is here—and yes, it actually flies.

During a jaw-dropping demonstration event at a SpaceX rocket development facility in Texas on Thursday, Tesla showcased its highly anticipated electric supercar doing the unthinkable. The Roadster drove upside-down on a massive curved ramp, executed a mid-air flip, hovered for a few seconds, and stuck a perfect landing. It even vaulted over Tesla’s entire vehicle lineup, floating right above a Cybertruck.

“Well, it worked,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk remarked casually after the vehicle touched down safely.

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, was more direct about the milestone: “Flying cars are real.”

Here is everything we know so far about the vehicle that just shattered the boundaries of automotive engineering—from the aerospace technology powering it, to when you can actually buy one.

How Does the Tesla Roadster 2 Actually Fly?

If you’re wondering how a street-legal car manages to take to the skies, the answer lies in a cross-pollination of Elon Musk’s two biggest companies: Tesla and SpaceX.

The “flying” tech isn’t aerodynamic wizardry; it’s brute-force rocketry. Moravy explained that the Roadster 2 is equipped with 10 SpaceX-designed thrusters. These thrusters are hooked up to a system containing 600 liters of ultra-compressed air, which is used to lift, spin, and stabilize the heavy electric car in midair.

As Tesla noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “More compressed gas on board = more flight time.”

When it isn’t defying gravity, the Roadster 2 is busy defying the limits of terrestrial speed. According to Tesla, the supercar can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in a mind-bending 1 second.

When Will the Roadster 2 Launch?

Patience is going to be key for eager buyers. The Roadster 2 is the long-awaited successor to Tesla’s original Roadster. First announced back in 2017, Tesla originally promised the vehicle would hit the streets by 2020.

While Thursday’s demonstration proves the technology is functional, it is still a long way from the assembly line. Musk confirmed at the event that the Roadster 2 will officially enter production in 2028.

How Much Will It Cost? (Variants & Pricing)

Tesla is splitting the Roadster 2 lineup into three distinct tiers, catering to everyone from traditional supercar enthusiasts to those who literally want to take flight.

While final retail prices haven’t been locked in, Tesla has officially opened the reservation books with hefty deposit requirements:

  • “Performance” (Road Ready): The base tier designed for traditional hypercar speed on the pavement. Reservation Cost: $50,000.
  • “Thrust” (Race Ready): The mid-tier model, presumably packing more aggressive track capabilities and perhaps limited thruster tech for cornering and acceleration. Reservation Cost: $250,000.
  • “Rocket” (Air Ready): The top-tier, gravity-defying model shown at the Texas demo. This tier is currently “invite-only” and cannot be publicly reserved.

The automotive world has spent years wondering if the Roadster 2 was vapourware. With this week’s SpaceX-fuelled demonstration, Musk has proven the car is very real. Now, the only question is whether Tesla can navigate the immense regulatory and manufacturing hurdles required to put a flying car in consumer driveways by 2028.
