Corrections Policy

Our commitment

We get facts right, and when we don’t, we say so. If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the article link and what you believe is wrong. An editor reviews every report, usually within 24 hours.

How we correct

  • Corrections. When we get a fact wrong (a name, number, date, quote or attribution), we fix it and add a note at the end of the article: “Correction, [date]: An earlier version of this article misstated X. It is Y.”
  • Clarifications. When the facts were right but the wording could mislead, we rewrite it and add a clarification note.
  • Updates. When a developing story moves on, we update the article and add the time of the update. These are not corrections.
  • Major errors. When an error undermines the premise of an article, the editor-in-chief decides whether to rewrite it substantially or withdraw it. A withdrawn article is replaced by an editor’s note explaining why.

We do not silently change facts in published articles. We do not remove articles because a subject asks us to, unless they are inaccurate or there is a legal or safety reason.
