A sci-fi dream takes off
A futuristic flying car—hailed as a solution to traffic congestion—has successfully taken its first flight. The $300,000 Alef Aeronautics vehicle can function as a regular car on roads but is also equipped with propellers in the bonnet and boot, allowing it to take off vertically.
The US-based company released a stunning video showcasing the car soaring into the sky, evoking scenes straight out of a science-fiction movie.
A milestone in aviation and automotive innovation
Using distributed electric propulsion and a mesh layer covering the propeller blades, the prototype—an ultralight version of the Alef Model Zero—took to the air.
Comparing the breakthrough to the Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903, Alef Aeronautics CEO Jim Dukhovny said:
“This drive and flight test represents an important proof of technology in a real-world city environment.”
Social media reacts
As footage of the car taking off and flying over another vehicle went viral, social media users were both amazed and skeptical.
“Crazy. This is exactly how I imagined flying cars would be when I was 4,” one user commented.
“I’m not sure if parallel parking would become easier or a complete disaster,” another joked.
Others speculated about the massive energy requirements needed to power the flying vehicle.
Alef’s flying car edges closer to reality
California-based Alef Aeronautics is gearing up for commercial production of the two-seater Alef Model A by early 2026. The model is expected to have a 110-mile flying range and a 200-mile driving range, with autopilot capabilities for flight.
With 3,300 pre-orders already secured, Alef is also working on a four-seater version, the Alef Model Z, expected to debut by 2035. The Model Z is projected to have an impressive 200-mile flying range and 400-mile driving range, bringing us one step closer to a Jetsons-style future.
