Apple iOS 15.6.1: Here's why you need to update ASAP

Apple is urging its users to update their devices to iOS 15.6.1 as soon as possible. The new update comes with two major zero-day security exploits that can be used for attacks on iPad and iPhone users.

Apple asks users to get the iOS 15.6.1

Apple released the new iOS update for iPhone and iPad users. The company is urging users to update to the latest version as soon as possible. The iOS 15.6.1 update comes with two major zero-day security fixes, solving vulnerabilities that may have been used by attackers.

A zero-day exploit is one that the software developers are unaware of. The tech giant confirmed that it is aware of security issues that hackers have exploited in the past. Citing security concerns, it released Safari 15.6.1 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina users.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Union Minister for Electronics and Technology took to Twitter, urging iPhone users to get the latest update without delay. Additionally, CERT-IN, India’s Computer Emergency Response Team issued an advisory for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to get the latest updates.

More on the new update

Apple assured that they have addressed CVE-2022-32894, which can be potentially used for executing arbitrary codes with kernel privileges. The tech giant believes the exploit may have targetted current users. CVE-2022-32893 is another security vulnerability affecting WebKit and this update solves it. It also patched the Safari exploit termed CVE-2022-32893 affecting users of macOS Catalina and Big Sur. According to Apple, the exploit could be used for processing malicious web content. This could eventually lead to the execution of the arbitrary code. It also mentioned being aware of some reports suggesting active exploitation.

How to update to iOS 15.6.1?

To update your device to iOS 15.6.1, open the ‘Settings’ app on your device. Then head to the ‘General’ section and select ‘Software Update’. Following this, your device will install the new update.
