In the aftermath of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, neighboring Thailand is grappling with an unusual phenomenon among its residents. Many individuals report persistent dizziness and sensations akin to the ground swaying beneath them, a condition colloquially termed “earthquake drunk” syndrome.
Deputy government spokesman Anukul Prueksanusak explained that these symptoms result from disruptions to the human balance system, particularly affecting those with pre-existing anxiety disorders and migraines.
Government offers guidelines for managing symptoms
In response to the growing number of cases, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has issued recommendations to alleviate the discomfort associated with this syndrome. The guidelines advise residents to increase fluid intake, consume ginger tea, and avoid substances like alcohol and caffeine that might exacerbate symptoms. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to take regular breaks from phone screen, focus on distant objects to recalibrate their sense of balance and ensure adequate rest.
To address the psychological impact, the government emphasizes the importance of discussing one’s feelings and limiting exposure to distressing earthquake-related news, aiming to mitigate stress and anxiety levels.
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist
Health officials urge those experiencing prolonged symptoms lasting more than a week to seek medical evaluation. While “earthquake drunk” syndrome is typically not life-threatening, it can lead to complications such as impaired judgment and an increased risk of falls.
Surat Tanprawate, chairman of Chiang Mai University’s neurology unit, attributes the condition to an overstimulated nervous system. He notes that some patients may exhibit signs reminiscent of post-traumatic stress disorder, including flashbacks, insomnia, or a newfound fear of large structures.
Earthquake’s impact and ongoing recovery efforts
The epicenter of the recent earthquake was located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The calamity has resulted in over 3,000 fatalities, with rescue operations ongoing as more bodies are recovered from the debris.
