Inside Elon Musk’s Brutal Work Routine: 7-Day Weeks and 2am Naps, Ex-Employee Says

A former X employee has shared new details about Elon Musk’s demanding work schedule, revealing a nonstop routine that stretches deep into the night and often leaves only a short nap window around 2 am. The insights offer a rare, close-up look at the billionaire’s work style, which he has long argued is essential for building and scaling multiple high-profile companies at once.

Chris Bakke, who previously reported directly to Musk, described a schedule that blends marathon collaboration sessions, late-night meetings, and rotating commitments across Tesla, SpaceX, X, and Musk’s other ventures.

How Elon Musk structures his workdays across multiple companies

According to Bakke, Musk’s days begin with an extensive 10-hour sprint with Tesla teams. These sessions typically run through the morning and afternoon, immersing him in engineering challenges, production issues, and product development.

As evening approaches, Musk shifts gears. Around 5 or 6 pm, he starts product meetings with teams at X. These meetings often extend late into the night, followed by individual check-ins with employees. While scheduled for 10 pm, they often get pushed back to midnight or even 1 am.

After wrapping up, Musk usually takes a two-hour nap at the office, often around 2 am, before restarting the cycle with a fresh workload tied to his various companies.

The routine, while intense, reflects Musk’s longstanding reputation for extreme productivity and hands-on involvement.

Why long hours have always been part of Musk’s philosophy

Musk’s commitment to long workweeks is not new. For years, he has publicly argued that extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary effort.

In a 2014 speech at the USC Marshall School of Business, Musk told graduates that working significantly longer hours than peers creates a powerful competitive advantage. He explained that if someone works 100 hours a week while others put in 50, the higher-output individual will produce “twice as much” in the same time span.

This philosophy has shaped Musk’s leadership style across all his companies and has been echoed repeatedly in interviews, speeches, and social media posts.

Musk’s history of sleeping at factories and offices

The revelations from Bakke align with Musk’s documented history of integrating rest directly into his workplaces.

Across his career, Musk has shared stories of:

  • Sleeping under desks or on office floors
  • Showering at the YMCA during his early startup days
  • Working overnight when founding his first company with his brother
  • Staying inside Tesla facilities for long stretches during production crises

One of the most widely known examples came in 2018, during Tesla’s Model 3 production ramp-up. Musk said he slept on the factory floor to remain close to operations and personally address bottlenecks.

These patterns show that his recent schedule at X and Tesla is a continuation of a decades-long workflow built on extended hours and direct oversight.

The broader implications of Musk’s extreme work style

Musk’s demanding routine raises ongoing discussions about the sustainability of such work habits and their influence on employees. While Musk frames his schedule as a personal choice tied to mission-driven engineering, critics argue that it can create high-pressure environments for teams who may feel obligated to match his pace.

Still, Musk’s approach continues to shape workplace cultures across his companies, reinforcing the idea that innovation at scale often demands more than conventional work hours.
